expert opinion needed - build a 257 weatherby on kimber 270 action

Both cartridges are of the same length. My thought is to have a "shot out" kimber rifle in 270 (I love CRF), and pay a gunsmith to install a 257 barrel (26") on it. It might not balance well due to the length of the new barrel, but I use bipod anyway.

Any suggestion? Hope my plan is not laughable...

edit: maybe the magazine will be too narrow for 257 bee?

As long as it is an 8400, not an 84L any competent gunsmith should be able to do it. I believe the 84L is dimensionally too small for a magnum cartridge.

While we're on the subject of Kimber mods, the magnums will take an H&H length length cartridge with just the mag box spacer being taken out. Oddly the bolt stop and ejector are already positioned for the longer cartridges. I fight off the urge to make my 7 Rem into an STW about once a week. My .338 would make a spirited 340 Weatherby.

I wouldn't wish a 7 lb 340 WBY on my worse enemy. Maybe i'm just a wuss!

7.4 pounds. If I take Weatherby published velocities with 225s, and compare them with the velocity I already get with the Win Mag on a recoil calculator there about 10 foot pounds of recoil difference. That's about the same as a .243. Surely a little .243 won't kill you.

Trouble is I already have 4 of them and a plan to rebarrel a tired build into a fifth. Anything over 5 is just silly. or is it?

I thought about doing the same thing some time back, but while I really like Montana's, I'm not a fan of the 8400 series. Most Kimber issues are with those guns, like feeding, and the stock shape is a lot different than the 84M and L.
Have a look at a Legendary Arms Professional. I bought one in 257 and it's been great so far. It would be very similar in what you're looking to build; a reasonably light 257 with full length bbl, great stock and weather resistance all for probably the same price as a rebarreled Montana.
