Here is letter from CFC / RCMP:
Dear #########,
Thank you for your telephone call today with regard to the legal classification of the Remington 870 shotgun and the MCS system, ###############################################################################################################x. Short barreled pump action shotguns with folding stocks are controlled within the Criminal Code of Canada, and it specifically details that the firearm is reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by means of folding, telescoping or otherwise. The otherwise does not take into consideration replacement with commercially available stocks such as a pistol grip stocks. Thus it is very legal and does not change the class of a non semi automatic firearm if you put a manufactured short barrel and pistol grip on the gun.
#############################################################################################################################################################################################
I trust this response has met your needs, please feel free to call if I can be of any further assistance.
Regards,
#########
Manager

WOW!!!

This is great news. However, at some point it might be adviseable to show a somewhat less redacted copy of the letter.

I wasn't questioning the validity of the letter, and I do understand that until some products are market ready, silence is golden.

However, we are finding on both sides of the border, that letters are made of paper, not kevlar. Rulings and decisions do get reversed, or clarified to reclassify a product based on further findings.

As an example, folks in the US invested in the Akins Accelerator on the assurance that there was a BATFE approval letter. The BATFE later reversed there decision. Much has been made of the fact that the origional opinion letter was in referance to an SKS and not the Ruger 10/22.

I suspect that a lot of nerves and tempers would have been settled if the origional wording had been made public. Keeping private information like the respondants name and address makes sense.

:D I never thought of that. How many do we have here? Slavex, Baalan, anyone else??

I'd hold off on slapping a pistol grip on a short barreled 870 yourself's for now....

On a side note... how about a short little pistol grip rem pump rifle for a bear gun?

I'm new, so I don't know how stuff like this usually works... I know about 12.6 and all of that, but what happens when a small ruling like this is reversed? Lets say, in theory, a gun was first ruled to be non-restricted/restricted but bad publicity leads the CFC to make them prohib... Are current owners exempted or does the RCMP show up to your door and demand access to your safe?

If this is true, this is awesome! But until I see an official letter from the CFC that specifically says "Reducing the OAL of a factory short barrelled pump shotgun to less than 660mm will not affect it's non-restricted status." I'm extremely suspicious.

It's well established that a great many people at the CFC haven't got a clue, and the letter quoted seems to me to almost be confusing stocks consisting solely OF the pistol grip with stocks that have a pistol grip ON them.

Apologies to those whose photos I hacked up.

Anyway, I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed. Would make for a nice backpacking/hiking gun!

Something like that. If you had some warning you could throw a full sized stock on it and keep it. I believe they send you a letter first.

intill i see that letter stating specifically, that under 26 inches is ok with aftermarket parts, i don't think it is worth the paper it is printed on.

all it said was manufactured short barrel. absolutely nothing about its length.

18 inch manufactured barrel is shorter than the average 26 inch one.

I have been working on this project since June 2006. After lots of yes and no’s, as soon as I had ruling in my hand I approach my friend Joe from Dlask Arms Company. He started working on this gun right away. Making this gun was not easy at all. He went try lots of prototypes until he finally had barrel and complete gun that he was satisfied with. We sold only four of those guns. First guy to get it was our friend "Ike". We kindly asked everybody who saw this gun in make or bought it from us to show us little respect and keep our project secret. There is lots of money invested in this project and we were not ready to hit the market yet. Thank you Korporal for publishing it
Since this info went out too soon Dlask Arms have only limited number of finished guns in stock right now. After those guns are sold, they will be taking preorders. Dlask Arms is in process of becoming CGN supporting dealer and will be advertising and offering this gun for sale right here on Canadian Gun Nutz.

Hey man, I'm very sorry if my post caused you or Joe any grief. That was not my intention.
I was told to wait a week before going public, I did. I was going to shoot this thing this weekend with a lot of fellow CGN'ers and didn't want any stupid questions over legality to come up. I wanted a soft landing because for sure there was going to be a lot of concerned posts here on Sunday!
If you look at my original post, I didn't mention where I got the gun from, one of the other guys posted Dlask Arms as the source. I only wanted the FRT number out there so I wouldn't get in any trouble.

Again, I'm extremely sorry if this caused any problems. I thought I was doing the right thing.

I feel like a tool.

I wondered the same thing- they mention pistol grip stock...

Can you imagine what it's like to fire this thing??? :runaway:
I'd like to hear from people who have...yes it has the LCF in spades but can it be fired tolerably??

That would be an awesome bear defense gun for back country people with no carry permit...

I didn't read it the same way. What I took was that "otherwise" meant taking a full length stock and altering it whether by folding, telescoping or cutting to below 660 mm.
