I know someone successfully imported/exported an AR lower through Brownells, but searching "export lower" in this section didn't reveal the result I was looking for. Can anyone either point me to the thread or explain the process please?

I have not heard of this being done. The lower is the registered part of the rifle so it would be the same as importing a firearm into Canada. AFAIK, you would require a company like Irunguns or Prophet River to handle the paperwork for you.

Probably best to contact Brownells. They would be able to give you the right information on the procedure if they do the exports. I've noticed that if you click on "available outside USA" receivers do come up but they may not be available to us Canadians.

it can be done, but it's involved. Given current exchange it may not be worth it. when we were par, it definitely was. When Colt AR's were going for 2400-2600.00 up here a few years back, I was able to import 3 for 1800.00 each. those were complete rifles.

As of March Brownells advised they are now charging $250usd per export permit which is required for uppers lowers and barrels. The fee used to be $10/3%.
This has cut off a great supply for us Kiwis on the other side of the world.

Has anyone there been though the export process following this change?

This just means that Brownells (and probably the US Gov) is enforcing their ITAR restrictions on NZ. $250 US is the cost of an export permit to a US company exporting significant firearms parts. We have companies that specialize in exporting US firearms to Canada so it's usually cheaper to use them.

Contact Irunguns or just buy one locally. I can't imagine how you would be able to save money importing one when you can buy them here for under $200 (stripped). Unless of course you have a specific brand name in mind that is either hard to get here or very expensive.
To me it's just too much trouble to import them, I just buy them from the EE or from one of the local shops.

Good luck,
let us know how you make out.

Off the shelf, the cheapest you can buy a stripped lower here is $215cnd (240nzd). By the time you spend another 300 on a stripped upper and 300-400 on a barrel, the savings add up quick.
On sale you can buy a stripped lower or stripped upper from Brownells for $50usd (62cnd, 70nzd).

Brownells advised they moved tiers in their itar registration which was why the fee increased to $250 in March.

Unfortunately IRG don't ship outside Canada, would be awesome if they did! ☺
There are some canadian companies that do ship internationally, but for a lower the answer always seems to be 'no'.

Thanks for the replies.

I would imagine that the motivation for doing such a thing would not be to save money, but to acquire something very specific that they like.

Because you can buy one from the USA for $65. Not hard to see the savings there.

No. You can buy one IN the USA for $65 USD.

When you're paying several hundred dollars to get it over the border, you quickly end up spending more money and getting a cheaper lower than what you can get up here for less. A lower will require an export permit. Irunguns is the cheapest import service in town, and they charge $200 for the first firearm, and $150 for every one after that. In short, you won't be saving money trying to import a cheap lower.

And that is the case NOW that Brownells has changed their policy. That was not the case previously, as others have exported lowers without paying the egregious export fees.

Cool, so you're driving the DeLorean then?

You also used to be able to drive over to the states, buy a gun, then drive back up, without even needing a passport. Talking about how things used to be is completely off topic.

yup, and they did charge me the $250 for the export permit

^ this

Some folk are happy with a $100 Norc Lower off the EE while others are willing to spend north of $500 for a stripped lower depending on manufacturer, rarity, bragging rights etc...Essentially it becomes a "Want Vs Need" syndrome

Personally, I'm frugal. The cost of living here isn't cheap, but also the more you save the more toys the same money buys.
The $50 uppers and lowers from Brownells are Aero, Bushmaster etc, so not low quality.
When importing into NZ we dont pay any other fees as long as the value is below $400.

It was great while it lasted. With Thunder Ridge confirming he was charged the $250 fee, I guess that's it unless you do a big order (-:
