Wondering if an 870 Express barrel will work on an 870 Wingmaster. I'm concerned because the Wingmaster bbls have the ball detent and the Express model uses the ratcheting polymer thing in the mag tube. Will the mag tube cap loosen up during firing? What about if I add a mag tube extension?

Thanks,

Nick

I've used a the Express barrels (both vent rib and slug) on my older 870 Wingmasters for years without any issues. I tighten them up enough that disassembly normally requires a guy to hold the gun by the barrel and give the buttpad a light bump on the ground as you twist the cap or extension off. You don't have to screw them on so tight though because it really only takes a half a second to check if they have come loose or not...and if they have it only takes another half second to tighten it back up.

I used an express vent rib barrel on a newish wingmaster not too long ago. After about 100 shots the retaining nut did loosen up a little, but I only noticed because I had to take the barrel off to clear a jam. It never got loose enough to make the barrel sloppy and it was only snug to begin with. I cranked it down by hand and didn't have any problems for the ~180 shots after.

I have no idea how a mag extension would affect anything.

For a simple fix most guys just stick a O-ring in and it helps or there is a special spring ring you can buy to take care of it.

An O-ring or wavy washer (from Brownells and possibly also our supporting sponsors) will both do the trick. Or a magazine extension with mag tube clamp will work as well, though it makes swapping barrels more time consuming. Or you can have the ball detent installed by a competent gunsmith or do it yourself with the right parts and tools.

Cool. WAVY WASHER I have seen and used them but never knew the right name. I do the ball thing on my own guns as you mention it is not real difficult as you know. Also a lot of the new barrels now are fitted already or at least have the hole drilled take care
