I am making an open sighted big boomer for carrying in serious grizzly terrain. I have used peep/ghost rings alot and like them. I have never used express sights but they have a certain appeal to me. What are quicker and easier to use? Any suggestions for express sights and ghost rings for a mauser? let me have your opinions (preferably real world hands on expirience).

Cheers
Simon

Once a person gets used to using an aprature sight with a big hole, they can get onto a target easier , faster and farther away far more accurately than with an open sight.

This is a fact, not some idea some have, it's been proven time and again.

I used to shoot a P14 with a Lyman all-steel receiver sight and a small white front bead.

If I was doing up a Mauser with open sights, I would use this set up again, no question. The nice thing about a receiver sight on a Mauser is that you can use the original military safety w/o changes.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that the better choice of sight is the one the shooter is most comfortable with. If the gun is to be "use specific" as a protection rifle, the functionality of the piece is more important than aesthetics, accuracy, or power. While I believe that the ghost ring rear and a rectangular front post is the best solution, it is only the best solution for me. An express sight can be very fast for the man used to it, but IMHO you must pay close attention to the style. The V in the leaf should be shallow, providing for a fast index to center the bead. The deeper the V, the slower the sight is to use. If you choose an express sight, consider a blank leaf that you can regulate for elevation yourself. A single leaf is better, as some have concerns about a long range leaf standing up from the recoil of the first shot, and it is a common practice to remove the folding leafs from the sight.

From what you say, you have experience with the ghost ring, so if you can snap shoot effectively with a ghost ring equipped rifle, that is probably the best solution rather than having to learn an unfamiliar system.

Actually, I did have a BRNO 602 for a time that had a very useful set of express sights. I could use them no problem.

Yep, pretty much confirmed my feelings. Anyone know a good reciever aperature sight for a BRNO 602?

Yes, New England Custom Gun makes a nice unit that attatches right to the 602's rear scope mount. Pounder has one, it is a very nice sight. You can check them out on the Brownells web site if you don't have a catalog.

I agree, the factory express sight on the Brno is quite good, although I've known the long range leafs to flip up under recoil causing a subsequent shot to strike high. The express sight on the .500 I used overseas was another story. The V was narrow and deep, and my cheek had to crunch down hard on the stock for a proper sight picture. This resulted in more apparent recoil than would otherwise of been necessary.

My Husqvarna 9.3x57 arrived from Tradex today-I bought this one because it had a Hellqvist peep sight, and it looks to be everything I was looking for-a heavy hitting short range moose/bear rifle with a robust well protected hunting sight.Next order of business is to see if I can get a red tru glo sight to replace the plain front sight and then I'm good to go-it should pick up easily in low light.I may get a chance to try it on spring bear-we;ll see, there's some big ones here on the island.

Got to say-dealing with Anthony is a pleasure-he gets right back to you, sends pictures of any detail you want, and describes the rifle very well, ships promptly and when its in your hands- in the condition he said it was. Can't ask for anything better than that

I can't seem to find them on brownells or the NECG site. Seems I can only find one for ruger bases, weaver bases and EAW mounts.

Here are the express sights on my 602.

And here's how it shoots with the express sights and the 100 yard leaf.
