Last Sunday at the club I was watching a fellow shooting skeet with his autoloader. He took his position on the pad, popped a shell into the chamber, closed the action, inserted a shell in the magazine and then decided it was the appropriate time to hand tighten his extended choke tube.

It's not the first time I've seen shooters do this. I saw one guy, an experienced shooter who should have known better, finger tighten his extended chokes with this left hand while his other finger was in the trigger guard of a loaded and closed o/u. I mentioned it to him after he finished shooting and he hadn't even realized what he had done. If something had startled him causing him to pull the trigger he'd have probably blown a couple of fingers off.

Anyone else seen shooters doing this? Do you mention it to them when you do?

C-B:

I've seen it too...Yikes ! ( Also know a shooter with a couple of fingers missing, yep, you guessed how ! )

And yes, when I see it, I mention it to fellow claybusters ( so does the buddy with the missing digits .... a very graphic reminder ! ) ... but do it quietly, on the side, so as not to embarass them in front of others. Generally, it's well-received ... they just "did it out of force of habit", or "never thought".
I also frequently need to warn shooters (especially new ones) not to crowd the opening on 7 low. A target, or piece of broken target in the elbow, right off the trap arm can do a lot of damage, both to unprotected skin and to nice walnut !

My own "choke check" habit is to check before I even get to station 1, and then (infrequently) while between stations ... NEVER on the pad, and NEVER when loaded.

Good point ... I hope others read and acknowledge !!!

Thanks BB. I've never known anyone who had it actually happen to them but it's not hard to see how it could. It's a good point not to embarass someone over it and I too take the shooter aside and mention it if possible.

If someone has a problem with extended chokes coming loose I recommend using Briley grease on the threads. I have found that it helps keep the choke from backing out and prevents them from getting stuck in the barrel.

Can't say I have noticed that on the trap line, but I am not really looking at the other shooters. Dumb move to say the least.
