Can 2-3/4" cartridge chambers of double shotgun barrels, either SXS or O/U, be reamed to accept 3" hulls without disassembling the barrels and reaming on a lathe?

They can but whether it's a good idea is up to you.

Lengthening chambers takes the gun out of proof. Depending on the gun and the barrel profile lengthening the chambers could create potentially dangerous weaks spots just ahead of the chamber. Besides if the gun was made for 2-3/4" shells you are putting additional stress on the gun with the magnum cartridges.

If you do this be prepared to keep that gun forever. There are many English guns that were brought into Canada with 2-1/2" chambers that have been lengthened to 2-3/4" and beyond by gunsmiths of varying degrees of incompetence. One of the first things I do when considering a sxs is measure the chamber length and compare the results to the proof marks. If they don't match it's no sale.
