I know there a ton of Enfield masters on here so I thought I'd ask here before taking my purchase to a gunsmith.
I just bought a Lithgow SMLE 1Mk3* from a fellow CGN'r, overall the rifle looks to be in very good condition, except it has trouble extrating my snap cap from the rifle. It looks like the rim of the snapcap is being pressed up against the receiver wall and I have to really pull on the bolt to get it out.

Any ideas on what might cause this?

Thanks guys!!

Snap cap is made of plastic? Maybe its deformed a little. With the bolt OFF the rifle, have you tried to put a live cartridge in chamber to see if seat completely without any resistance?

My snapcpas are metal and yes I have tried a live round.I just noticed that there is a little resistance loading and then lots while extracing at the same spot. The receiver doesn't look to be bent of warped in anyway.

The chamber may require a good cleaning. No light rust or small burr in there,if you can see?

I wonder if something is wrong with the bolt head, Is the extractor moving normally? If you had another bolt head ( same size), you could swap and see

The extractor is (supposed to be) spring loaded. It forces the rim of the case against the receiver raceway on the right side. Try to establish if there is excessive friction when extracting.

Excessive friction is a way to put it :) My metal snapcap left a scratch on the receiver (on the right side) I've ordered a new extractor set and a friend has a bolt head that is the same size so I'll try that as well.

Thanks for your help everyone!! Merry Christmas!!!!!!

How long is your snap cap? If it is about as long as a headspace gauge it is so short that the extractor will actually tip it over as it comes out of the chamber, as soon it is withdrawn far enough to create that space. Then what tends to happen is the top edge of the gauge starts to drag on the chamber wall, and the opposite side at the base (where the rim is) tends to pivot on the rear edge of the chamber and hang up on same.

That's why the extractor and spring are to be removed before the gauges are used. You can get away with not doing so, but you have to take the mag out and reach up in the mag well and push the gauge under the extractor, align it with the chamber with your fingers against the push of the extractor spring and guide it into the chamber.

Try to feed a gauge into the chamber without centering it with the extractor in place and and the sharp forward edge of the rim will actually scrape metal off the receiver wall.

A little off your topic/case perhaps, but that's all I can guess at from this distance.
