Extraction problems with brand new Mossberg 500.

I bought myself a brand new in box Mossy 500 Persuader from Lever Arms last week but am already having problems with it.

Sometimes the action won't open after firing off a round. When it does finally open after reefing down on the forearm sometimes the extractor won't extract the empty shell. It happened mostly frequently with birdshot 8 but would also happen on occasion with 5's and 2's (all Winchester rounds).

Any thoughts on what the issue may be?

I'm going to call Lever Arms tomorrow and see what they can do for me seeing as the gun is only 8 days old but since all sales are final I might have to prepare for "sorry we cant do anything, ur stuck with it".
 
You could have a tight chamber. Clean it thoroughly and try cycling some rounds through it(live or inert) then I'd try it again at the range or where ever you shoot.

remove the barrel and feel inside the chamber with your finger/examine with a flashlight -- ive heard of several recent budget shotguns (870 express included) shipping with rough chambers, which can cause all sortsof extraction issues.
 
Okay removed the barrel and gave it a thorough cleaning. No loose shavings or anything inside.

I'll be shooting again this Sunday so hopefully I don't have anymore issues but I fear I will.

Since I'm in Vancouver I'm really trying to avoid the hassle of sending it to Ontario for warranty. With my luck they'll shoot 100 rounds through it incident-free but when I shoot round 101 through it, it will be problematic again.

I regret not stepping it up to the 590 now. My friend bought one at the same time I bought my 500 and his is smooth as silk by comparison.
 
I have the same problem with my 1980's era 500A. The bolt lock doesn't seem to release after firing. Mine only fails sporadically with slugs/buckshot. Birdshot seems to work fine.

It's been to the gunsmith, bolt replaced, still does it occassionally.

I have replaced it with an HP9-1 which ALWAYS works. The 500A has become a safe queen.
 
hmmm thats not too encouraging but I suppose the occasional lemon is inevitable. Such is life.

Too bad it had to happen with my very first firearm. I'm hoping my Glock won't be cursed with any issues when I finally get it.

Many recently manufactured shells are themselves lemons unfortunately.

Anyway to the OP, did you degrease and clean it before you shot it? The packing grease that most new shotguns ship can really gum up your chamber if it gets baked in and gritted up from shooting.
 
Although this may sound like an insult, it is not meant in any way to be.

Did you thoroughly clean the chamber/barrel before firing the first time?
The reason i say this is because the manufacturers now use an 'anti-corrosive' which is fogged on. this stuff works a lot better than the old grease 'er up and ship it method, but because it's fogged, when you look down the barrel, it'll look clean basically right out of the box.
Unfortunately, if you fire even a couple of shots, the pressure and the heat generated within the chamber, converts this stuff into a varnish-like material and this can, in essence, 'glue' a cartridge case to the chamber making extraction difficult or impossible. Regardless of the brand of firearm.
I know of this happening and the barrel had to be 'cleaned up' by a gunsmith in order to get it to work again.
If you did clean it first, then likely you have a faulty extractor, which can be replaced under warranty i would think.

Thanks for all the input.

The gun was NOT thoroughly de-greased and cleaned before I shot it for the first time. I asked about cleaning it when I got to the range and was told that shooting right out of the box would be just fine, so thats exactly what I did.

Some of these responses have opened up my eyes though. I'm a noob :redface:

My gun is now with a friend who is going to clean it up properly for me and then we'll see if the problem persists on Sunday.
