Hello,

What exactly are shotgun auto extractors for hinge break barrell actions, and can you buy/install them into any 12 guage? I am hoping to buy a side X side and would like to install an extractor so I do not have to pull out the shells manually, instead they fly out on thier own when the action is broken open.

Any info is great,

Drach

Your gun should be equipped with extractors that, at the very least partially extract the spent shell(s). I have never seen a gun without a system of extraction. Are you reffering to ejectors? Some pics of the gun might help.

Extractors lift the shell out of the chamber slightly so you can remove them by hand. Ejectors will pop them out.

I don't think retrofitting to ejectors is possible.

Just buy the gun with the features you want. It sounds like you want ejectors, but i'm not sure why. Extractors are perfectly usable, and I love 'em.

The difference is:

Ejectors are sometimes nice to have when hunting... fire your two shots, break the gun and the shells fly out, you reload faster.

At the range, ejectors are handy, if you have to clean up your own hulls, or if you want to save your hulls for reloading. Saves you having to bend down to pick up all the empties. The ejectors raise the fired shell when you open the gun, and you can just pluck them out and drop them in your shell bag.

You have it wrong, extractors raise the hulls enough so they can be easily removed. Ejectors launch the empty hulls out and away from the gun.

Correct you are sir. As is Grouse Man.

While retro-fitting ejectors may be physically possible, the amount of time, inticate modification and highly skilled labour involved would make it economically unfeasible.

Buy an ejector-model gun to start with if you really want that feature.

For a field gun, I far prefer extractors - the amount of shooting one gets and is entitled to these days is far from fast & furious, and hardly life-threatening (as in dangerous game) , therefor rarely warrants ejectors on a double gun .

I have two double barrels that have extractors, and on double that has ejectors. I like the extractor at the range, where you will probably keep your shells for reloading, but in the field I prefer the ejector for faster reloads. Where I hunt it is not uncommon to find more than one bird in a very small area and the faster I can reload the better my chances for the subsequent birds.

Just my thoughts!

"...can you buy/install them into any 12 guage?..." No. Has to do with the design of the shotgun. Most hunting double and single barreled shotguns come with ejectors. They extract and eject when you open the action.
"...hoping to buy a side X side..." Got one in mind?

Thank you. Yes, I meant ejectors. I am interested in buying an Outlaw Dominion Arms side x side, anyone know what it has? Also, as for retrofitting, I understand it's not such a good idea now, thanks again for the input. I would REALLY like to get a short double barrel side by side with ejectors though... any ideas?

My Franchi Reinassance has ejectors. If I don't want the shells flying out I just open gently and remove by hand but nothing beats the feeling of cracking open the barrels and having 2 empty hulls fly over your shoulder after you've just smoked a double while you're reloading 2 more. Unfortunately my shooting abilities aren't the greatest so that doesn't happen very often. That's why I have to make the most of it when it does.:D
