This is my first post aside from my introduction, so if I placed in wrong area could the mods please move it?

Just finishing up as I go on here.

For those who didn't have the opportunity to read my intro, I recently got my R/PAL and inherited a rifle and shotgun from my father who passed last fall. One in particular was given to my father when his father passed, and I chose to keep the .410 and a .22WMR Marlin 782 and my brother got the other guns.

The Cooey's stock was pretty beat up -as it was his everyday carry on the farm he had. It's seen a lot of use -and abuse. So I've decided to start cleaning up the shotgun.

So tonight I decide I'm going to tackle the stock.

Grabbed some helpful tools;

..and check out that price!!!

I removed the stock and forestock, and got sanding with some heavy 120grit emery paper, then some 600grit , finishing up with some 0000 steel wool.

Then added my first coat of linseed oil. Interestingly enough, the can I found in the cold room must be about 40 years old, as the applications include -and I quote; Paints, treatment of leather, treatment of wood floors, furniture, burns, cattle (as a laxative).. :)

I'd like to eventually resurface the barrel, but am unsure how I want to do it. Your thoughts are most welcome!

Thanks for the comments.

(final pic to come when assembled)

also, there was a box of rifled slugs with the shotgun... I've read.....on the internet...that you can and cannot use them safely in this type gun....my grandfather used them for his steer when I was a kid... so I'm assuming it's safe?

Nice job! You are good to go for slugs. Just use rifled slugs. Like you said your grandfather used them and so did thousands of others. Enjoy.

ive never refinished wood. Does the linseed oil make it greasy to touch?

not at all. it's a really nice matte finish. It was still a bit oily at the 1 hr intervals, but by morning it was completely dry to the touch. Water beads right off it too..

If you have a beat-up gun like I did, this makes it look much nicer IMHO anyway...

Thanks for post and pics. I've got my Dad's 1956 Sears Roebuck / JC Higgins 12 gauge that I've been thinking of cleaning. Now I see how to do it.
Thanks !

Paul

I have an old cooey single like that of my dads and an older cooey 22 f my grandpas that both need the stocks refinished. Not to mention the metal needs surface rust removed.

I had seen some guys have older cooeys that almost look stainless from some kind of polishing or something

I used double boiled linseed oil on my stock, takes longer to dry and needs a lot of coats but looks good too.

looks awesome!!!
i'd like to see compare the before it dried and after, i assume the pic you posted was before it darkened?

The pic I posted last night was taken minutes after I put the last coat on. Since today has been rather slow, I decided to continue applying coats as time permitted. I'm up to about 7 or 8 now, and it looks great. I'll post more photos in the morning when I have daylight..

Cheers!

I probably should have used a multi-quote, but whatever. I'm just trying to boost my post count. :)

when you say boiled, do you refer to a type or linseed oil, or bringing it to a state of vapour twice?

Thanks!

With and without flash to show how the oil makes it go from matte in low-light to a semi-gloss in bright light.

I have used lots of boiled linseed oil and tung oil for stock finishing. Nice stuff but beware and dispose of rags soaked in the stuff properly. Very prone to spontanious combustion.

very nice now just go over the barrel and action with fine stel wool and give her a caot of tramclad rust paint i just did an old double barrel shotgun i gotwith the paint anjd it turned out amazing . as far as slugs go you will be fine to shot rifled slugs thru this shotgun DUTCH
