Hi,

Brand new to shooting shotguns in a trained discipline sense. I mentions in another thread that I was interested in taking the Dynamic Shotgun course at Silverdale.

It is my understanding that shooting a shotgun is done both eyes open. I am right handed + left eye dominant. This means that if I shoot right handed (both eyes open) I will always shoot left of my aim point. I can quickly correct this issue one of 2 ways.

1. Close/Cover my left eye
2. Shoot left handed

Either way I seem to be doing something unnatural - How should I start my "training" on day one to get the best results ?

If you can learn to shoot left that would be ideal. I am also right handed and left eye dominant. I didn't even know that eye dominance was a thing when I learnt to shoot and was always terrible at bird hunting, so much that I pretty much stopped and I would just be the caller. I tried to start shooting left and that was a no go (truthfully didn't try that hard and I only own right hand pumps in shotguns) so I cover my left eye....world of difference. The only con I have with covering the eye is seeing ducks coming in from the left and on really wet or cold days the patch sucks to wear. I also find that if I wear the patch for a really long time I almost have this weird sight disorientation thing for a bit when I take it off. If I didn't already have so much invested in my firearms collection I would force myself to shoot left but for me it would just be too much money to replace all my guns.

Do they make left handle 870's ? I feel like I could handle shooting left handed quite easily. Plus loading would then be done with my dominant right hand. The only problem I really see with that is ejecting spent shells across my supporting/loading arm.

When I was growing up I only shot rifles - which never raised this issue because I would squish my face into the stock till my left eye was in place (that was silly) then later simply closing my left eye (which felt very unnatural but worked)

I think I may have to be a right hand rifle/Left handed shotgun shooter.

You don't see a second front bead at all? I'm pretty 50/50 dominant, and I see two barrels and two beads when I have a shotgun mounted. I just know to only pay attention to the left of the two images.

You can get front beads that are shielded on one side so your off-side eye can't see the bead.
