On my Mark 4 there is a threaded ring near the eye piece, I can move the entire eye piece back and forth, has about 1/2 inch to adjust. What is the purpose of this?

Cheers!!

That's the focus of the reticle, by the way. It's not meant to adjust the focus of the image, just to let you get the crosshairs nice and sharp for your individual eyesight.

As stated this is just a lock ring for the ocular (eyepiece) lense. If the eyepiece and ring are locked together use your hands only (no tools) and unscrew them and back off the ring so you have room to screw the eyepiece in and out. The proper way to set up the scope for your eye is to point the scope(after it is mounted on your rifle) at a blank surface such as the sky or a white fence. You then turn the eyepiece in or out until you have the sharpest reticle(note you are not focusing the the target at this time). When you have achieved your sharpest reticle, lock the position of the eyepiece with the locking ring with your hands only. Some maunufactures choose to use a fast focus with a coarse thread without a locking ring and while this may be faster the only thing holding the eyepiece in place is the tension on the thread. I like the locking eyepiece better as once you have set it it won't move accidently. Phil.
