I'm getting back into shooting sports after being away for many years, as I near retirement age my eyesight ain't what it used to be. What is your advice on eyeglasses, safety glasses, bifocals etc as regards sighting, iron sights and optics? What do I need to know to make informed decisions?

I wear progressive no-line bifocals day to day and single-vision sunglasses. Needing bifocals the single-vision glasses are good for distance but lousy up close. I haven't been to the range in many years let alone sighted down a barrel. My PAL won't come through for a couple of months yet. How do you old timers cope with vision issues or is it a concern at all?

Thanks for listening.

i wear progressives and don't have any issues with scoped rifles. i can always get a clear view. for spotting with binoculars i use one of the holders that let my glasses hang arround my neck. i use prefocused minox binos without my glasses. its far easier. you may have issues with open sites, i quite trying to use open sites before i switched to progressives so i can't advise. i always found open sites to be difficult and prefered peeps.

Well, I wear glasses, and I find them to be a bit of a pain. With a good cheek-weld, the eyeglasses' top frame often manages to be in the way of the cross hairs, especially with low mounted scopes. To add to the problem, the glasses often fog up as well in cooler weather. So, I usually remove the glasses to shoot a scoped gun. I used to love open sights, now I find it hard to get a good sight picture with open sights with OR without glasses.

The exception to this "rule" is a red-dot, which works beautifully with glasses, with both eyes open. The problem is the lack of magnification for longer shots.... Oh well.

I'm slight myopic so I need correction for distance, like driving. Sometimes I wear glasses, sometimes contacts. With the latter I need reading glasses for reading, with my regular glasses I have to take them off to read. With binoculars or a scope sight I don't need correction but when I anticipate shooting I make sure I'm using contacts that day.

I've been shooting with glasses since i was 14 and have no problems with them. If your lenses are shatterproof i wouldn't bother with extra shooting glasses. My current glasses are only for reading the top 3/4 is straight glass, i wear them cause i'm used to them and carrying glasses in your pocket is a pain. Before i had cataract surgery my glasses where bifocals and still didn't present a problem with shooting, if you've been out of the game for awhile it may take a bit of time getting used to getting the proper sight picture. Good luck getting back to shooting.

Thanks guys for all the help, much appreciated.

Silver, that's the thread I was looking for. plowing through that now, thanks!

Dead meat , I have polycarbonate lenses for my bi-focals but I'll still ante up for proper shooting glasses when the time comes I think. I'm looking at the ones with inserts that will take prescription lenses.

You don't get eyes worse than mine... Myopia with an astigmatism. I bought my first Red Dot and I seem to be doing pretty good. I've heard that the relfex (holographic) sights don't work for you if you have an astigmatism - the dot may look like a bunch of grapes (distorted) if you have an astigmatism.

Anyone with an astigmatism use a reflex sight or is this an old wive's tale? Don't want to buy an expensive reflex sight and not be able to use it... I'll try to find someone at the range and test it out.
