Eyes and ears

Sound is transmitted through the bones, so ear plugs alone are inadequate, especailly indoors. Muffs cover the bones. That is why we use them. ordinary muffs protect. Electronic muffs make it easier to hear range commands and the coach. I use $20 electronic muffs i bought in the USA.

I wear foam plugs plus the muffs.

Hi, Just getting into this. New RPAL in hand and club safety course this weekend. Any recommendation for hearing protection? I already have about 25% occupational hearing loss and want to protect what I have left! Also I wear glasses. Do most just wear safety glasses over their regular glasses? Appreciate any input. Thanks.

When I bought my "2 for 1" eyeglasses, I made them put safety glass in the second pair... and it's only used for the range.

I use 30DB ear plugs and shoot .22 / 9mm outdoors.

Picked up the '2 for 1' glasses yesterday. Regular progressive left eye, single vision dominant eye with a focal range to the front sight. High impact/scratch resistant, 15% yellow tint, quick change lenses. Really nice to see the front sight in focus with out having to tilt my head back so far. I'm the OP, thanks to all for the good advise. Still waiting for the LTATT..............

I've found the winning formula for me. I got a single focus lens on the left side and a bifocal on my dominant right. The "reading" part of the right lens is small and cut lower than normal. The top is optimized for the front sight at 24/25 inches. This is my third try but since all eyes are different that's what it may take for some. Since these lenses are in an insert for protective shooting glasses I can use them with different coloured shields.

I just got my stuff, and my goal was to find the highest possible protection for my ears. After much research I ended up with Peltor Optime 105 muffs (NRR 30, they claim it is the most protective muff ever tested by an accredited agency), and Howard Leight MAX foam ear plugs (NRR 33). Combined, even people shooting magnums beside me don't hurt my ears anymore. Just make sure you get the foam plugs nice and far into the ear canal or you won't get the maximum NRR out of them. A lot of the cheaper or slimmer muffs only get NRR of 23-25 or so.

For eyes, right now I just use standard aluminum frame w/anti fog safety lenses. They were only $9 and seem to be fine.

I should also mention my previous muffs were some Princess Auto $3 ones that claimed NRR of 32 which was not the case. Also, with the cheap muffs, I felt a lot more of the "shock" when people shot next to me and my ears would ache the next day. That is not the case with my new Peltor Optime 105's.

i picked up some cheap ears. went to Princess Auto and got those plugs-on-a-band types, NRR of 23dB or so, but they're VERY convenient, light, and i can wear ANY kind of hat to keep from baking my head. they're good enough outdoors no matter what i shoot, and i can hear range instructions adequately well. i think they were something like $15 or less.
