I haven't competed in F Class F-TR yet but I'm signed up to do my first one at the start of June.

What I was told before at the range was that the F-TR class gets to use rear bag/rest but that it can NOT have ears on it. I've now seen some picture/video's of people that were said to be shooting F-TR and they had big leather rear bags with ears on them.

Also some of the bi-pod's I've seen appear to be some crazy advanced bi-pod that are a hair away from a bench rest, defiantly a far cry from the standard harris style bi-pods usually kicking around.

I've read through some of the rules, they more say what you can't do. Can someone please give me a link or tell me a good description of what is going on with bipods and rear bags/rests in F-TR class? Whats the basic rules for the rear rest and front bi-pod?

Thanks

There can be some regional differences and also some resistance from some persons who consider 'bunny ears' to not be tacticool. First start is the rule book and you'll find no limitations on the rear bags. Heck, you can use a sandbag.

Bipods are limited in that they are considered to be part of the total allowable weight of the rifle. Yes, they have come a long way in the past few years and there are now quite a few examples to choose from.

I am involved in JSA Tactical and we manufacture Cordura shooting bags in 3 sizes (Small/rear, medium, and large).........Check out DS Tactical in New West. They are the official retailer for our bags and a CGN sponsor........ ;)

No issue with ears on the rear bag. Most guys use them. Some of the best F'ers in the country used Harris bipods at Worlds last year so don't get too caught up in the equipment race. Try it out, and see if you can borrow some different gear to get a feel for what you like and what kind of shooter you are. Trying all the latest and greatest gets real expensive real fast.

Good luck, and have fun!

Rear sandbag - cannot be attached to the front rest. That's it. Under ICFRA, you can even have it adjustable although no one bothers. I have never seen an F class shooter that DIDNT have a rear bag with ears so not sure what advice you were given.

Bipod - 2 legs making contact with the ground. Must be attached to the forend and weight is added to overall rifle weight. There are a few specs on spikes but no one bothers as they don't work all that well. Most F specific bipods will use a ski of somekind.

Bipods are getting very sophisticated but you can use whatever you want. Some do use the harris to superb effect. Others will go to the latest shiniest gee whiz bipod. Whatever makes you happy and you can learn to drive (and afford).

The better bipods will make it much easier to have consistent fire. Is it necessary? As long as you know how to use your gear and it is ENOUGH, the wind is your biggest foe.

If you are shooting at the Westerns in Chilliwack, you will likely see all the various options available today. Chat with the owners and see their thoughts. It is always a world of compromise.

The joy of F class is the rules are pretty much wide open.

I shoot both types of rear bags with and without ears........I have been using a brick bag (no ears) with my LR aluminum stocked .308 win and like it. Use whatever works for you.
