F-Class Scopes

I used to use a 4.5x14 Leupold, then moved to a VXII 6x18, and finally to a variXIII 36x. My back up scope is a variXIII 6.5x20 Leupold. I don't find mirage inhibiting the use of my 36x Leupold. When I use a lower power scope during mirage, I find that the mirage is still there, and target defintion is less. So I use the 36x almost exclusively for F class.

You may have noticed that I use Leupold scopes only. I have not been disappointed by them. I have used the warranty, and am very pleased with the service.

However, Weaver target scopes, and Nightforce scopes look very interesting. I would be willing to test them at the range, if somebody shipped them to me.;)

When I shoot F-Class I will be using a S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM-II w/ Illum. P4 reticle.

The only drawback will be the thickness on the standard P4 reticle(for smaller targets the reticle can be a wee thick). However this scope is mainly used in Sniper matches where a fine reticle would be hard to pick up so I went with the standard P4 reticle as a trade off.

For strictly F-Class as would have went with the P4 fine reticle, as I understand the V-Bull area has been changed and is now smaller.

I used to use a Leupold MK4 fixed 16X with Mildot reticle and had no problem with that scope.

Leup VX III 8.5-25x50 LRT Fine target dot

Mueller 8.5X-25X50 eraticator

both work well to 1000 metres, but the 1" mueller tube need a tapered base.

F class scopes

Hi All:

I hear the Nightforce NXS scopes are quite good. 5.5-22 x 56mm and 8-32 x 56mm with 30mm tubes. they are very clear and crosshairs are fine and sharp. price is high but not as high as the S&B although I like those because the elev knob has a lot of mils for one turn. My 10X42mm S&B PM 30mm tube has 14 Mils on the one turn which is 48 MOAs therefore you don't need to count turns even from a 100 yard zero to 1100 yds say for a 308. This might be a consideration in a sniper match where speed is important. An S&B 4-16x PM 34mm tube Mil Dot will run at 2500$ US and the 5-25 is around 2800$ US. The NXS like the 5.5-22 x 56mm is 1400$ US and another good choice is the Leupold Mark IV 4.5-14x 30mm tube with 50mm obj and target turrets w/Mildot and can be had for 1060$ US (check opticsplanet.com). I saw a 5.5-22 x 56mm NXS with MLR reticle for 1800$ CDN at Corlane's. Otherwise there is the 8-25X Leupold Long Range Target Duplex which is a good choice for F class. The S&B PM reticle is more suited for sniper use than F-class. US Optics also make a good scope but they are also quite dear. I find them too big.

My first choice would be the Nightforce. Many guys use them in the US and they are always advertised in Precision Shooting. see Bruno's shooter supply.

Good shooting

PS a friend of mine has a 4-16X S&B PM 34mm tube mildot scope on his PGW Timberwolf 338 Lapua and I witnessed him doing a 0.92 inch 3 shot group at 560 yds with it so I know the S&B crosshairs are fine enough ...:)

I'm shooting the now discontinued NF 5.5-22 56mm Varminter. Less cash than the NXS, and I personally like the 1/8th adjustments. While this scope has served well so far, I'm thinking that a 8-32, or even the 12-40 versions, now marketed as BR, by Nightforce, might be the way to go on a strictly f class rifle. I started w/ a 4.5-14 leupy. The target looks mighty small with that scope, now that I've made the jump to more power.

X 2:)

The double turn elevation is superb, only 1/4 of its range is used for 1000 yards.

glass

I use many different pieces of glass

2-24X Mitchell Optics (an improvement on the Unertl)
6-24 Leupold Varix III 1" tube
8-25 Leupold Varix III 30mm Tube
4.5-14 Leupold M4
5.5-22 NXS
6-24 B&L 4200
8-32 B&L 4200
The Mitchell's are on a 6br and a 284 and are my most used rifles. The scopes are sequencial serial numbers. Objective dia. 2.5", tube 1", OA length26.25", weight 3.25 lbs. These are awsome sopes.
The leupolds are on a 6.5x55 and a 243 WSSM.
The M4 is on my 308 Tactical.
The NXS is on a 338LM.
The B&L's are on my varmit rifles. I don't use these for competition due to the limited elevation that they have. After 300 m you need tapered bases and this can be a pain.
When I started shooting F Class I use a Tasco Varmit 6-24 with no problems on top of a 30-06. I shot that combination for 2 years with no malfunctions. You can spend as much money of glass as you want.
