As I am just about to start up shooting again and am budget locked the most for the money and not sorry catagory has me looking at ths savage 12 lrpv in .223 1-7" left port right bolt. And keeping in mind on the cheep were posible can I get a base and ring set from weaver that will allow the use of a 30mm tube on a viper scope or millet not sure the best for the money but atempting to get mounts rings and glassup for arround 1000.00can. to shoot 100 to 600 meters maybe 6-24 x50 or 56mm. When this setup is in place and when I can aford it a savage 12 f class t/r .308 for the same 100 to 600 meter at cedar springs all will be factory class ,not sure if this .308 would even qualify as a good 1000yd f class but thats the aim of my q today advice on rifle base ring and scope combo for sav 12 lrpv and the f class t/r .308. just waiting on pal papers to come thru and will perchase soon after very soon I hope.

Huh ? Wanna throw some punctuation in there mate :) Anyway:

.308 - good calibre. Will be fine for distances you mentioned and is one of the two F/TR calibres ( other is .223 )

Savage rifle is thought by many to be a good one. I haven't used the LRPV but it seems popular.

You can get base and rings from Weaver but I would recommend others - want to stay reasonably priced: consider EGW base ( 20 MOA ) and TPS rings.

Im not a fan of the optics choices but they are not, necessarily, bad. You may wish to look at other brands and, keeping price reasonable, I would look at Sightron if I were you.

Get into reloading.

If the goal is F class I would not recommend the LRPV. I would recommend just getting any of the HB 223 9 or 7 twist rifles. When prone, the RB/LP is more of a pain then an aid. We all pretty much use RBRP for simplicity and ease of use.

BVSS, VLP (w/ a cheekrest), even the 12FV will do great for your initial needs and be plenty competitive in a factory class even out to 1000yds.

The FTR is a great rifle but for the money, you can pretty much assemble a rig with a quality match barrel and outshoot it. See my website Tech section for ideas

There is little reason why you cant build a Savage With optics for around $2000.

In FTR, 223 or 308 are shot and there are many many options here. I prefer the 223 and the heavies. Others are using the 30cal 155 to 210gr bullets with excellent success. Either of these combos will hit well beyond 1000yds so no worries there.

For mounts and bases, give me an email or PM and we can review all the options based on the rifle, your scope and your shooting goals. Lots of stuff works but don't always work together.

Do have a look at the Sightron line up. There is nothing in its price range (even for much more money) that equals them for optics and mechanicals. If your goal is F class competition, there are features that we prefer and I can discuss these with you.

Neither Vortex nor millett will offer you anything suited for the sport.

Short answer, lots of ways to get you set up for a limited budget and be competitive.

Let me know...

When this setup is in place and when I can aford it a savage 12 f class t/r .308 for the same 100 to 600 meter at cedar springs all will be factory class ,not sure if this .308 would even qualify as a good 1000yd f class but thats the aim of my q today

Cedar Springs is limited to 400m but we usaully only shoot 300m. A .223 with a fast twist 1:7" shooting 90 gr bullets will do better than a .308 shooting 155's all the way out to 1000 yards and beyond.

We (the ORA) have Cedar Springs booked for this weekend Oct 8-9 and also for Oct 29-30. Come on out and see what we do.

My set up is a .223 Savage Model 12 VLP with a Sightron 6-24x50 with Burris Zee rings and Weaver bases. I had never shot F-Class before and my first score at 900 meters was 70 out of 75 with I think 5 V-bulls. Not bad for a first try and a rifle package of 2000$. Lots more potential too with some tinkering ...
