Given the choice of .223 or .243 for f-class(m) which would give more consistent results using hand loads.

Thanks

Stewie

Either could give consistant results. 6mm VLD bullets might work better in the wind at long range. .223 barrel is going to last longer than .243.

I have considered barrel life for the .243 and have not been able to find any info on "tuned" loads to extend it. That essentially forgoes the f(m) class if I have to replace the barrel. If I were to load it to the lower limit would this help? I use Match kings in my Swede so I would likely use 107gr SMK's for .243

Just remember that factory twists are not always what we want.

243 usually has a 10twist and the 223 could have a 9 to 12 twist.

You want the fastest twist you can get or not worth the time.

A Savage with a 9 twist in 223 is actually very good for most F class distances. A 223 with a 12 twist is a royal waste of time.

The 243 will be better even with a 10 twist but the barrel is more likely to overheat/warp. You are likely to be able to stabilize 90gr VLD bullets. Forget about the 107's. They tend to like 8 twists.

With F class relays needing upwards of 25rds, you will need to test to ensure that your groups stay stable. Many barrels change POI when they get hot.

And a .243 will get hot. I have a 700 in .243, with a tight necked chamber, Shilen 1:8 barrel. It rapidly gets really hot.

Williams Lake long range shoots.

A couple of buddies of mine are talking about heading down to William's Lake B.C. for some organized 1000M rifle shooting. Does anyone have any info on this? If so, can you explain a little bit about what classes there are and what guns and loads qualify for these matches? Optics?
I have no experience in organized long range rifle shooting, so need basic info. Such as would my .25/06 Browning 78 factory gun qualify and would it be a good round to use? I am also working on a heavy .50 bench gun weighing 20+ lbs. It's a .50/460 so not a BMG, would this qualify for a category? Do I have to keep barrel length to a maximum length or diameter at muzzle or breech?
Sorry for the newby questions but there are a couple of us that want to give it a go.
Merry Christmas!

www.dcra.ca for all the rules.

There are two to three classes. F(O) - 10kg, any sight, any cal up to 8mm, any front and rear rests except no rear mechanical rests, any safe trigger, etc.

F(F) - 8.5KG or close to this, 308 w/ 156gr bullets and 223 w/ 81gr bullets max weight, any sight, any rests as in F(O). Some are requiring bipods so check the rules.

F(M) - factory rifles, no fixed rules that I am aware of so check with local rules.

The 25-06 will not be ideal simply because of bullets available and super heating your barrel. Can it work? of course, but not ideal.

The 50cal is not likely to be allowed.

www.6mmBR.com for lots of options for F class rigs. Look up the US national and interviews with top shooters for their thoughts and gear. You will also see my rifle in Guns of the Week.

load with H1000 to maximize barrel life. I got 1800 rds from my Savage with H1000. In 1 in 9.25 twist 105's shoot great. Never tried 107's but assume will be OK. Dont worry about the barrel. The guys who were loading for 4000 fps were the guys who had trouble.
