Fabarm barrel messed up ...who knows what made this pattern deep in the bore

Hi all ,
trying to figure out this mess with my shotgun, got on EE, second hand in excellent shape, the bore 5 or so inches in from the muzzle has a pattern in the bore in a twist like pattern all the way round with grooves cut into the bore in a cone shape , they are deep , and 1/8 inches apart ... this must be the result of a weird choke tube or something eh????? the marks start shallow more towards the rx/chamber and get worse towards the muzzle , and stop at 4 to 5 inches from the muzzle sharply , and deep... any idea people... never in 40 years of handling guns have I seen this...

Fixed full choke? Sounds like large size steel shot fired through a fixed choke. Any bulge felt on the outside of the barrel?
 
No these grooves are like a stretched triangle larger towards the muzzle, but stops deep , and sudden like, and wide , might be able to get a pic.. what a shame , nice shotgun.. Its the trainer 20 inch with heat shield

Looks like chatter from the reamer. Shoot them and the distributor an email, there's a chance they know about it and may have already offered a solution. All else fails, your local gunsmith should be able to clean it up for you for the $100.00 range.

I remember reading something about these barrels, not sure how it goes , and to take these marks out might mess that system up? they claim good accuracy I think it was.. Anyway thanks, sure does look like a tool got in there alright... :) a couple of 'em, not Fabarm folks , me thinks someone tried to open this baby up and got stuck. :)
 
I doubt it will have any real effect on the function other than driving you nuts knowing it's there. LOL Good on you for looking, I haven't looked down mine in at least 8 years other than to make sure I can see light through it before shooting.

That looks a little too consistent to be caused by shot. And it's helical. There's nothing in a smoothbore barrel that would cause the shot to spin (Your patterns would be HORRENDOUS if it did- Like shooting those little shotshell rounds out of rifles or pistols with rifled barrels). Can't be from steel shot. No idea what it WOULD be from though. Not much help though, unfortunately. Sorry haha
 
My best guess is a hammer forging dud made it through QA without being picked up. Reamer chatter sounds like a good option too.

That 'might' explain the markings.

How's it shoot?

It IS a shotgun. Unless the marks are rough enough to catch a wad, or deep enough that the gases bleed out sideways, like as not, it's safe enough.

Your decision. Me, on what I see, I'd shoot it.

If they spin at all. Mostly the 'rifling' on them is to allow them to compress through the chokes.

Until I see high speed video of one rotating faster as it moves away from the barrel, I'll stick with that.

There is no way repeated slug use would cause such a distinct pattern. It's definitely tool marks...the question is, from what?

I've owned 8+ Fabarms and have never found as much as a chatter mark on any surface. If I had to guess, this is from work the previous owner attempted, or paid someone to attempt. :)

Bang on. Every one I had the fit and finish was beautiful.

Good call, its back in the mail today... thanks all ... tool marks it has to be... no question.. Breaking News !!! After some range work this morning ... yay what a shooter... not sending it back :)

Well good morning people, just wanted to plug Fabarm some here, I"m not sure what tool was used, but when this firearm set there in the box looking very nice, I had to try it.. :)
I mustered 25 2 3/4 heavy bird shot , 10 foster slugs, a few sabbot slugs, some 00 buck , and headed for the field.. Started with the bird shot, nice tight pattern from 20 all the way out to 40 meters.. slugs in that range were amazing, never missed one shot on softball sized rocks, just smoked 'em like clay targets.. bottom line go with your gut... It also cleaned up nice with no build up in the area of the tool marks... This gun is a keeper :) I'm a keeping this baby... ! <3 Oh .. reason for going with the trainer model with 20 inch was the look, feel, and speed ... its not a charm bracelet :)
