In my quest for reasonably priced 410 ammo I was noticing more off brands, and was wondering if there are any that are not worth the discounted cost..

Anyone shoot these in 410

Troy
Clever
Sellier and Bellot
BPS
Fiocchi

Looking specifically at 3” #6s but any info helps

I like to reload the 410 and can tell you that the bps hulls are garbage to reload
The factory ammo shot ok
Had similar expirenced with the Troy stuff

I’ve had nothing but problems with the Troy 3” in the wife’s Mossberg 500. They seem to be slightly oversized in circumference and the hulls lock up in the chamber and are a complete pita to remove. I have never had problems with this shotgun with any .410 ammo I’ve used, like literally never. I wish I had another .410 to test it in but I unfortunately don’t

Thanks for the replies. While online shopping I actually found the best price was Elwood Epps for Federal 3”. A buck a shot. Whereas everywhere else, 29.99-34.99 seems to be the new rate for 3”

got 6 boxes, so I should be well stocked for grouse for a few years. Also picked up a couple boxes of rem low noise 410 which at 29.99 is expensive, but cheaper than cabelas by $10/box. (Garden gun load)

I have the same issue with the Troy 2.5 inch shells
I have to run the shells through the last two stages of my MEC grabber to recrimp and put a taper on them, quite a few crimps were not done properly
Some shells I even have to run up through a 30-06 rcbs bullet seating die to get the plastic squished down enough to fit the guns
Very poor quality hulls, I wish Winchester or even challenger would make a big run of 410 ammo
I won’t buy Troy or bps ammo any longer, it’s just poor quality stuff

Fiocchi makes very good ammunition.
Have been using it exclusively in the Rem 1100 Sporting 28 for about 10 years now.
Have not tried it in the .410 yet, but would not hesitate to. (Have always used WInchester and Federal)

Have not tried any of the others, except S&B in a rifle, and it worked just fine (we took 7 animals in Africa with it, as that was what the PH had for the rifle we used on that hunt).

People shoot .410 all over the world where these " off brands" come from and gave fir decades, im pretty sure you will have success too.

What would it take, to get into Hull reloading from scratch ?

I am set up for regular centrefire re-loading, but have not looked at this yet.

But given the cost of 410, which I recently started with, I am interested.

It depends on how far into it you want to go
You need a specific shot gun press you can’t use a rifle press as far as I know?
A MEC 600jr single stage press is over 500 bucks now
A Grabber progressive is almost 1400
Sizemaster is 750 ish
The 600 works ok but the progressives have a better collet sizer and the separate taper crimp die
I think Lee made their old school reloader in the 410 but it’s prob hard to find, it would be the cheapest way to go if you could find one
A MEC sizemaster press is basically a 600jr but has the better resizing collet in it like the progressive presses do
Then you have to get wads, primers, powder and shot
For 410 H 110 works the best I find all you need is 16 grains of it for a half ounce of shot
If you have a supply of decent hulls that’s half the battle right there lol
I can load a box of 410 for about 15 bucks paying for components in todays market so it’s definitely worth reloading
There are other brands of presses out there too, some are more expensive then others, keep an eye on the EE I see 410 single stages come up now and then for decent prices

One of the guys I shoot skeet with bought a couple flats of .410 from Prophet river. I done recall what he paid exactly but it was reasonable……….for .410. This was for 2 1/2” target loads though. I load my .410’s in brass (Magtech, .303 brit and .444 Marlin) on a slightly modified MEC jr. Cheaper in the long run that plastic hulls………..maybe. 😁

Thanks, that's helpful.

I reload for the 410 and it costs me about the same price to load one 2.5 inch target load as it does to buy a 12 gauge target shell. Of course you have the price of your press on top of that and hulls.
My hulls are all AA that I've kept from new and I've had good luck loading Challenger hulls using the same data as the AA hulls.

The Fiocchi shells are good but if you plan on reloading just know they use a really fat primer. You'd need nobel or rio primers to get good fits, otherwise even the cheddites are loose, forget win or fed 209s

I have been using Fiocchi 28 gauge hulls for skeet for several years. With 7-8 loads on them, they are still serviceable. I was using Fiocchi primers, but ran out two years ago, and have been using Cheddite since, with no issues at all. I can't comment on their 410 hulls, as I haven't laded any, I am using AA hulls in my 410. I have fired Fiocchi 410 target loads, as well as Estate, with no issues.
