I am considering a build that will be using factory ammo instead of the more preferable method of developing a load.

I know that one of the best ways to achieve accuracy is to develop a load, and I have done this in the past with good results. However at this point in my life I am traveling a lot and dont have the option of setting up a decent loading bench and developing a good load. To make the most of my trigger time I want to be spending time in the field bagging gophers primarily (with the option of coyotes in the winter).

Am thinking of budget Winchester White Box ammo (45 grain JHP) for gophers and was wondering if anyone had advice on chamber dimensions and twist rate to try and get the most accuracy out of this type of ammo.

My plan is a Savage action with a Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger, a Shilen prefit barrel and a good bedding job. I figure that this setup should get me 1/2 MOA with factory ammo, or am I expecting to much from factory ammo???

Any advice would be appreciated

i wouldnt say your expecting to much from factory ammo, your expecting to much from Win. white box...

i agreee that your set up is possibly capable of 1/2 moa but i can 99% garuntee you that its not gonna be done with much less then federal gold match or similar quality

Hmmmm I dunno about that... I have seen amazing groups come from Prvi partisan 55gr 5.56 headstamped factory loads as well as some Hornady 55gr SP training ammo...

I don't think there is a problem getting 1/2Min out of a good tube with factory ammo... Problem it seems to me is how far out you expect that kinda accuracy with factory ammo... After 200-300yards things go south pretty quick with lite bullets loaded without perfect tolerances.

Garbage in-garbage out, simple as that. You might get lucky and find cheap ammo that will shoot well. Even with Fed GM Match it does not mean your rifle will shoot 1/2 MOA. And for the price of 10 boxes of GM Match you can buy yourself a nice reloading kit.

Reloading is the ticket for accuracy but the WWB 45 gr HP is actually one the best deal outhere, my MR-1 just shoot outstanding with them so as my BVSS, with a good rifle being around the .5 mark is quite possible, here is a picture of a 6 shots group with WWB... just over .5... JP.

Yes I realize that by not reloading I am eliminating the most sure method of achieving accuracy. However it's not really an option for me at this time.

It would be very nice if the cheap WWB worked out but if not I have had good success with factory Hornady Varmit ammo, averaging 3/4 MOA with a factory barrel.

I just figure my chances would be better if my chamber dimensions and twist rate are chosen with the cheap WWB in mind.

I have a factory savage 12lrpv 9 twist that absolutely loves that winchester 45gr jhp garbage! Its funny actually that the cheapest ammo I can buy is what it likes the most if I am purchasing it. Handloading it likes 69gr nosler custom comp bullets and LOVES the 70gr berger vld's. Have actually had success shooting the winchester stuff out to 650yds on decomissioned propane tanks and it was even fairly decent across a lake on rocks at 800yds. I am an avid handloader so its really weirs to say this, but it IS possible to be accurate with cheap ammo as long as the rifle likes it. The complete opposite can be said for win white box 55gr fmj as it "patterns" at 100-200yds out of the same rifle but at the stoney lake fun shoot I fully intend on attempting to take the 45gr jhp stuff to 1000yds successfully. Before the flaming begins I said "attempt" not necessarily pull it off but should be a hoot in the process :)
