Factory vs Custom barreled rifles with factory ammo - 270 Win

Wow those are some rough groups from an A7.

My 270 never printed above an inch at 100 yards with cheap factory ammo.

Cool project, thanks for taking the time and spending the money on ammo and posting results bud! Interesting to see!

I had three factory barreled 270 Winchesters, M700, M70 and a A7. And another wearing a Bartlein barrel.
5 different boxes of factory ammo. 100 yards and an idea to compare the accuracy between factory barreled rifles to a custom barrel.

It wasn't surprising that the custom barreled rifle shot 4 out of 5 boxes of ammo better then the best factory rifle (0.72" average on 5 boxes). But it was surprising that the point of impact was nearly identical between all the different kinds of ammo at 100 yards with the custom rifle, compared to quite different points of impact with different loads on the factory barrels.

The Remington shot the second best on average (1.07"), the Winchester third best (1.44") and the Sako was last (1.72").

Also, the factory ammo appeared accurate considering 3 out of the 5 boxes grouped near 1" average out of 4 guns.

Also, the velocities quoted on the boxes of ammo were generally in line with the exception of the Remington Corelokt 130 gr which shot only 2905 actual vs 3060 fps quoted.

That was fun.

What is the length and contour of your custom .270 barrel? It’s a sharp looking set up.

Are all rifles bedded and set up the same? I have had tremendous groups from all 3 of the rifles mentioned when they recieved similar massaging. Assuming the Rem 700 with the Bart Barrel might have a few more tricks under the hood...... That said I have had custom barrels shoot great and some well....

The rifles all had the actions bedded, barrels free-floated with 2# triggers with the exception of the A7 which has an aluminum bedding block, not bedded but free-floated. The Bartlein is a good shooter for sure, but I was surprised that all the different factory loads hit the same POI. That was a first.

Great test and results thanks for sharing,

The thing about most factory rifles is you just never know what your going to get as far as accuracy goes, not to mention quality control, but with a decent aftermarket barrel chances are it will shoot, I’ve had about 50 Custom and semi custom rifles built and can’t say I’ve had any lemons, odd one has been a little fussy about what it likes but end up shooting in the end.

I’ve had one expensive factory rifle that wouldn’t shoot less than a 4 inch group with any factory ammo or handloads, I even had two other experienced shooters try it as well so it ruled me out, and nope wouldn’t shoot, not only that it was a range certified rifle that came with a computer generated test target as it was supposed to be test fired before it left the factory.....????

With that being said I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent 270 win that will shoot lights out with factory Barnes 130gr TTSX ammo, and yes it does it everytime at the range......

So again with factory rifles you just never know what your going to get.
