After reading through this forum for the last few months I've decided to start loading my own Edit:for my 30-06. For my first batch of reloads I decided to go with some winchester 180 grn bulk powerpoints (WB308SP180), partially based on price, and partially because the factory ammo groups well in my rifle. After full length resizing and seating my first bullet, i measured OAL and came up with 3.242. Looking to make sure I had done everything right I pulled out an unfired 180 grn win powerpoint and measured it up. OAL is 3.150. The bullets are seated at two different depths because the cannalure is in a different place on each bullet. The factory bullet has a cannalure about .650 of an inch from the tip, the purchased bulk bullet at about .750.
Now the question is, are the bullets created for factory ammo different than the bulk bullets? Did they label my box of factory ammo wrong? I'm not really that worried about the whole thing, is more just a question of why. Can anyone verify the length of a factory win 180grn power point cartridge?
