Was digging thru my bullets and found these Failsafe Bullets- what i have is a box of 25 Winchester Failsafe 270 cal 140 gr and a box of 25 Winchester Failsafe 30 cal 180 gr.
Now i also have a box of 50 Combined Technology -Nosler-Winchester Fail Safe 7mm 160 gr and the same in 30 cal 180 gr .
The bullets look exactly the same from the 2 diff brands all are hollow point and all have a lubalox charcoal colored coating.

Now- they are a discontinued item with both companys and i have never loaded or shot any game with this bullets - have any of you ? and the results where ?

The picture on the box of the bullet shows it has a steel insert with a heavy lead core- the base is covered over by a disk- the coating is called Lubalox and they have a copper alloy nose and jacket . Look to be like a well constructed bullet - anyone had experience with them ?
Thks JIM :)

They were all made by Nosler using the Winchester design. (Copper bullet with steel encased hard lead rear core) Initial offerings had inconsistent performance with several accounts of non-expansion on soft animals. Later runs seemed to have solved that problem.

The biggest problem however was that they were a very "hard" bullet and pressures could jump into the unsafe range quickly and easily. Winchester even had plenty of problems with factory ammo blowing out primer pockets due to over-pressure. The black coating was an effort to reduce pressures similar to what Barnes did with their blue-coated bullets.

Barnes finally solved their pressure problems by cutting rings in their copper bullets while Winchester & Nosler abandoned the Failsafe.

It is interesting that Nosler introduced their non-lead E-Tip with a warning in every box to never go above the middle loading shown in their manual when using the bullet something that should have been done with the Failsafe.

Used to use the factory winchester black talon/fail safe ammo in my 338win before I started reloading for it. Great for moose, no expansion on deer.

I have dropped 4 moose and 2 black bears with factory 180gr Failsafes in .300WM. Both bears had fist size exit wounds. On member of my hunting party shot a cow moose in the head at 25 yards, with a 180gr FS,.30WM. Recovered bullet from the skull weighed 168 gr.
