How do you define "FAIR CHASE"?
I define fair chase as
(1) pursuit of a game animal that has't been" Baited or fed to make it want to be there"Ie;grain, hay ,food plot, comercial baits and mineral baits.
(2)NOT hunting from a water source to me is not fair chase. You get thirsty you want a drink. They have to go there .I'm talking dug outs, water troughs.being the only source of water for miles. not lake or river.
(3)hunting with in a fenced area is NOT fair chase no matter how many acres the fence surrounds .A 5 acre fenced area is still a pen just like a 10000 acres with a fence is still a pen ...
(4)shooting an semi domesticated "farmed "animal Not fair chase!
(5)Chasing with a truck /atv "NOT" fair chase
(6)Driving with huge amounts of people and maybe dogs to chase past large groups of shooters .Not fair chase!

Lets hear your opinions of fair chase
I've gotten sick of watching so called hunt shows that are "fair chase".
How could you possibly miss a deer eating broad side at 50 yards ?when it has been fed there for how long???or has to come for water?

Well good for you! You are an awesome hunter. Maybe others can pipe in who are even more awesome. You know, using flintlocks or who knows, maybe spears!

Ya ok, using a modern firearm isn't really "fair chase" now is it.
Or even a spear!! I guess hand to hand is the only "fair chase" way in reality!

Reality is if it's legal, just because you may not like it, is no reason to climb on a high horse & declare other methods immoral.

Or do we just have ANOTHER troll

A term used by enforcement to protect the game animals from Poachers, end of story, the rest is you the hunter harvesting an animal without messen it up before and after the shot, i.e. know how to get that critter from field to freezer without loosing any meat.:)

i don't like to chase at all- makes the meat kind of "gamey" due to all the adrenaline and other jusices flowing at the time- as to fair, you have to remember that ALL ANIMALS SAVE MAN have all sorts of advantages over us, and we NEED tools to eat- that's how the old bulls do it- they have used their "tools" that nature provided to their best advantage and gained experience over the years to reach that ripe old age- if you look at us from a biological point of view, we're the most poorly equipped animal on the planet- it's our BIG BRAINS that have given us the advantage- so any method. as long as its legal , is "fair chase"
as to the "flushing method" i've seen wolves do exactly the same thing -
as to the fenced thing, if you go that route, you're going to give up about half the country- some farms go on for miles, and a section is 640 acres fenced- there's probably going to be some habitat in there, and most ungulates( mostly deer) have very little trouble with your average ranch or farm fence THEY DO JUMP, AND VERY WELL- most can clear about 8 feet
fences are meant for cattle

"Legal" chase and "fair" chase have little to do with each other.
A person will have to decide what they will accept for themselves and their hunting partners.
Baiting migratory birds is illegal, baiting some other species is legal. Some folks bait, some don't. I have my opinions, others have theirs.

Except for high-fence "enclosure hunts", I disagree with everything the OP wrote.

If it's legal, go for it. If I need to do a pushed hunt or use a bag of apples to help feed my family, I sure as hell will do it.

Besides, unless you are ground-hunting using a primitive bow to hunt (not sitting on a ridge with your high-power binos and 500 yard magnum rifle)...it's not really a "fair" chase now is it? Give your head a shake...we are more evolved, intelligent, and equipped than any other animal species on the planet...there's a reason we are at the top of the food chain. Using bait, group tactics, etc. just proves we are smarter than our prey...unless using your noodle makes it unfair as well......?

Screw fair , Legal is all I care I hunt with a 300 ultra But If some one wants to sharpen up there claws or pointy spear have at it I like to eat.

i'll disagree with you on the ridge thing- i don't use a magnum, but if it's across the valley 300 yards off, i'll take him- lots of times it takes better than a couple of hours to cover that terrain, and anyone that has observed "VANISHING ELK SYNDROME " has learned to take you shot whenever possible withn limits- you dismount, stalk to within range, and PRESTO- THE WHOLE HERD IS GONE- you can't see where, and your hunt is spoiled- that's vanishing elk syndrome- and chances are it was a big buck- i've had it happen after i've picked out my animal , dismounted, hobbled my pony , and gone back to the same spot- chances are , ther're still there, only now you can't see them cause you're looking from about 4 feet up instead of the back of the horse or they've quietly moved off through the mist- so if there's a ridge shot, i'll take it

When you come across a fence, how do you know what side you're on? Fenced in? Fenced out?

hmmm. yesterday i went hunting, and when i found some does i sat down on the ground, then i waited, and waited, and waited, and after about 2 hours a buck showed up. he is hanging outside now.

is it unfair to use the knowledge that at this time of the year, bucks are thinking with their little heads and not their big heads?

btw, i live in country that is dryer than most and i can tell you from experience that waiting at a water source is a waste of time.
