Hey, been away awhile! So my buddy has a ruger redhawk for sale, blued, 51/2 in barrel, really good condition. He wants $425 for it, is this a good deal? He wants a 357 is reason for selling. From what I've read, RedHawks are supposed to be tough and handle a steady diet of hot loads. I've handled a 629 before and prefer the trigger and finish on those more! Anyhow, I've read that some RedHawks have been known to separate barrel from frame!!! Anyone hear of this or am I just being paranoid! Not crazy about that as I sometimes take my 2 kids to range with me! Help! Should I buy or walk away? Thanks ahead of time for future responses!

That is a great deal. That could easily fetch 600+ on EE. The issue with the barrels separating from the frames was limited i believe. Basically the bonding agent and method (i.e. leaving the bonding agent on the barrels for extended periods of time before installation) chemically deteriorated the threads, making the threads susceptible to cracking/breakage when shooting heavy loads. This is what lead to the development of the super-redhawk. Once they realized what the problem actually was, Ruger changed the bonding agent and the method and there were no further issues. I don't know the extent of the problem but it was not that common so i wouldn't worry.

Actually the barrels were over torqued, which led to the barrel break just in front of the frame.
You can find reports an pictures on the net.

That's exactly the Redhawk version I wanted and I didn't mind at all that I paid $600. Your only concern should be that your friend might later realise he could have got more and resent you for getting such a good deal at his expense. If he has any ammo or other ancillaries for it, offer him a good price for the whole package.

Maybe that was more the issue. The bonding / lub agent ended up requiring to much torque when screwing in the barrel. I was lead to believe is was chemical in nature but who knows. I've never read an official recall notice or explanation from Ruger.

Did you snap up that one at P&D by chance? (Before i was able to get my visa out....) 600 is still a great deal imo

At 425 , it is a good deal ; and a good revolver as I have one myself....the only downfall is the ammo is quite expensive if you do not reload.....

No, it was from the EE. Excellent condition, included the factory plastic case, a Ruger leather holster and a couple of speed loaders with a belt pouch.

The Tooner brings up a very valid and prudent point, the acquisition of a gun is never worth the loss of a friend...I'm not his friend, have him PM me then you guys can laugh about it over beers afterwards. :p
