Fake Leupold scope question

Hello, everyone. I've tried looking on google, and i've read the sticky on the top of the page, but it hasn't answered my question.

Now, i know you get what you pay for, I have a Bushnell Elite 4200, and i think it is a great scope.

My cousin has offered to sell me his fake Leupold Mark 4 4-12x40 for $150 with 30mm rings. I was thinking that this would make a good scope to put on a 223 or 22-250 for target shooting.
Would this be an ok scope for the intended purpose? I'm not looking for super low light clearity, it's not going to be a hunting rifle, unless a coyote crosses my path at my cousins farm.

I do like the tacticle turrets on it, the paralax adjustment, and the illuminated reticle (both red and green). What do you all think?

Please don't flame, i really am looking for your opinion and experience, not bashing though.

Best regards

I'm using one on a 22 and really like it. Holds zero, MOA adjustments remain repeatable. Poor system for zeroing the turrets with a set screw on the side. But, you have to realize the limitation in that you could have it fail at any minute. Also, for $150 you can buy a new one. I bought mine from Deal Extreme. If you're ok with the quality and the fact it might fail on you, then you should proceed. If you have $350 to $400 you can get a nice Bushnell 3200 5-15 tactical that should be a lot more reliable and is much easier to zero the turrets.

nothing wrong with them for the money, they look good and seem to stand up well at least on smaller calibers, as long as you realize what they are and where they came from it will be just fine. $150 is too much though, I sell the odd one new for $125 and if you want to go through the importing and waiting time they can be had for less.

even with 30mm rings it would be too much?

The non-illuminated clone is better quality than the red/green thing. A set of 30mm rings is less than $10 including shipping on ebay. The last scope i bought was $68 including shipping. Just buy it with (FRAUD ALERT) and it showed up at the door 1 week later, and it came with rings.

I have TWO  of them. I love them. Currently both of the fake "Reupolds" are on my Ruger 10/22 and CZ452 Style. I call them my sniper setup 'wannabees'. :D

One of them has killed hundreds of groundhogs and gophers (I was in SK outside Regina last July of 2010). I love the side focus of the fake Leupolds.

I don't rely on them to track perfectly (about 1/3" MOA per click). Repeatability (box test) was acceptable for an UNDER $ 100 optic. Hey... you are gonna drop that much on an entry level Bushy or TASCO, so why not cheap Leupold FAKE? Well, the warranty is non-existent (big warning :runaway: ) but I still bought 2 of them because I like having the side focus on ALL of my optics. Yes, I quit drinking and smoking and now I can afford 3 Leupold Mark4 scopes on my Rem M700 hunting and Precision rigs. :D

I have been spoiled by the Mark4 glass and it seems to be my price point balance (between what I desire and what I really can afford, especially with my kid finishing Queens Univ and starting Chiropractic School) but for the low recoiling boomsticks, I had to cut corners somewhere and the .22 LR platforms just love the fake Leupolds.... Hey, I've owned them for about 4 years now.

I would not chance mounting them fakes on top of my M14 or any rifle above a .223/ .22-250 because they are still working for me.

Like I mentioned before, the repeatability is hit and miss (compared to my 3 Leupold Mark4 scopes), but once they are dialed in for a .223 or a .22LR, I always get my varmints. Just ask anyone who has hunted with me. :)

So in conclusion, "You pays your money, you takes your chances."

Would I buy one again? Well my son was starting at Queens and I had to cut corners somewhere. A dead groundhog shot with a .223 is still a dead groundhog. I'm out hunting in sunny weather (read: the fake might not be waterproof) and open hayfields freshly cut (read: I'm not bouncing around in a LAVIII) and with 2 hip replacements (read: I'm too disabled to deploy overseas) ; those 2 fake Leupolds I own served me well for the purposes! I would buy another one given the circumstances of my financial situation. Maybe I was lucky? Who knows?

I am somewhat reluctant to recommend another CGNutter on a budget buy one, but at the risk of getting flamed by the Kommunist Chinese Produkt bashers... I must say:

Don't buy ONE!

Buy TWO of them! :p

You all knew that was coming....

Okay, on a more serious note... If the scope lasts a few years and then craps out, you now have an opportunity to try the Myth Busters episode where they attempt to shoot THROUGH a rifle optic! :nest:

Peace be to journey!

It would make good video to appear to shoot through a Mark 4. You'd have to be hardcore to do it with the real thing.:D

I took out all but one lens with a 80 grain Berger out of my Middlested, and could use some old scopes to try again. Anyone have some junk for me to shoot up? Mythbusters aside, my moneys on a 300 grain SMK going the distance.

I bought two of them. Both crapped out within 100 rounds of (.270 Win.). One went completely out of focus, and the other stopped responding to adjustment. $270 down the drain. I don't doubt that others might have had better luck, by my two were simply garbage.
