Well, I just found out that my formerly cancelled Fall Bear Hunt is now back on!

Woohoo!!!:dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Looks like my Dad & cousin will be my hunting partners this trip, with an outside chance another buddy of mine will be also going. Two bears apiece, plus a Caribou & the chance for a few coyotes as well.:D

Now I have to go load up a bunch of new handloads and start getting the gear ready. Would've liked to have gone earlier, but it looks like we'll be leaving around Sept. 18th-20th depending; prepared for at least a 10-14 day hunt.:D

Don't care if I don't take a single animal, but am sure looking forward to "The Trip." Gotta' love hanging around the campfire in the evening, enjoying a cold beer or a hot Rum toddy, a steaming bowl of homemade chilli & telling tall tales and other sundry lies with your best friends & family; about the unbelieveable shot that you made the year before last, or the "monster" moose you took the year before that; or the time Dad buried the ATV while trying to drive across the Northwest Gander River & started to float down river:eek::D; or the time my brother had to drive two hours back to civilization on rough ATV trails & overgrown logging roads for more ammo - after missing, spectacularly I might add, on a book class Caribou stag (later determined that the scope was a victim of his gun boot!)!:D;)

I worked my arse off this past Spring/Summer & was so busy, I didn't even get a day at the range...just looking forward to our annual fall hunting trip. Then my brother got accepted to upgrade his ticket at the College of the North Atlantic & the rest of my buddies were working out of province, so no trip...:(

Then the good news!:dancingbanana:

We'll be hunting a new & unfamiliar area, but that will add to the fun of it. I'm not worried about filling the freezer, as we have a moose license for our home area this fall. That season doesn't open until October & doesn't offer that much of a challenge, as we almost always tag out within the first day or two. Fun while it lasts, but not the same as the fall hunting "Trip."

Life is good!:)

The only "interesting" development is that I'm going to have to take the two Labs along (Sandy, the Yellow Lab female & Bruiser, the Chocolate Lab male) on the trip. They're well trained & have no problems being crated, so travelling with them and leaving them to guard the camp won't be a problem. I'm going to take along the shotguns as well, as duck & goose season will be open by then and we might be able to squeeze in a day or two of goose hunting if we tag out early.

My neighbour will look after the beagles for me, but the Labs are housedogs & the GF won't be able to take care of them while I'm gone and the two of them are too much for my Mom to handle by herself, so I've got two more hunting partners for the trip! This trip has the makings for being one of the best ever, or a complete disaster...either way, its sure going to be fun finding out what happens!:D;)

Hey Guys,

The Caribou is for Area 64, Middle Ridge which is probably the largest Caribou Management Area on the Island. I've got my Bear tags for Area 27, Terra Nova (falls within the larger Area 64) as does my father. My buddy has Bear tags for the adjoining Area 28, Black River, which is also within Area 64.

I'd prefer if we could pick up the Caribou toward the far eastern area of Area 64 rather than have to drive a couple of extra hours, but no guarantees these days! Either way, should make for a fun trip.

Should make for a great hunt as there are very high bear populations in both areas. Was talking to a friend last night who is also a hard core berry picker. He told me that many of his favorite berry patches (blue berry) were denuded with bear scat all over the place & he's seen quite a few. I'd prefer to fill my tags via spot & stalk, but plan on taking the necessary grub in order to set up a few bait stations.

gth....I think you might've misread my first post. The Fall Bear Hunt wasn't cancelled...only my own, personal hunt, as my hunting buddies couldn't make it. Now that I've found "replacements" the hunt is back on!:)

great story on the planning of the hunt to about to happen..can,t wait to see the pics and hear the follow up story..
