is the lower receiver on FALs the prohibited part or is it the upper?

and is it possible to make a legal non restricted (or even restricted) home made FAL? they have commercial semi only MGs of all types, stens, mp-40s, m2s, 1919s, mg-34s, i would really like an FAL, maybe dressed as a C1A1

The upper is the firearm. All FALs are prohibited by name or by virtue of being FA or CA, so no, you can't make a homemade restricted or non-restricted version.

Like Stevo said, the FAL and all "variants" are prohibited by name. Firearms like the 1919, mg-34, m-14, ect are all prohib because they are either FA ro CA. Since the newly made firearms like the M1A (m14 variant) are made as semi, they are not prohib.

I know how you feel, I would love to own a C1A1, it would go great next to my Canadian Lee Enfields. But unless we can at least get rid of the stupid prohib by name BS, its not gonna happen. in a few decades, the only functional FAL's will be in museums as the grandfathered (people who owned them before the ban, so are allowed to keep them) individuals will have passed away, and since most prohibs can not be inherited, they wil be destroyed.

there is a company in sask. making new stens that are open bolt "conversions" of parts kits, they have restricted and non restricted versions, they make a new receiver that is semi only and they make a new mag well as the old one is considered the prohibited part, there is also a tutorial on the subject of converting stens in canada on another forum. ill post a links if im allowed

why couldnt i do this with an fal? i assume it would need to be unable to take a safety sear, and would need to modify the bolt carrier so it wont trip one as well as making it impossible to install a bolt carrier that would trip one

no ones ever tried anything like this?

Stens only prohib by full autoness. FAL prohib by name.

LEEENFIELD No1Mk4;
Are you forgetting the SA non-restricted M2hb, 1919a4, 1919a6, Mg-34 that we have offered ??

JUSTER is 10000000000000000% right
Since the FN family of rifles is banned by name it does not matter if the rifle was made selective fire or semi-auto, it is forbidden....

Didn't someone round these parts make a hybrid SKS/FAL? I remember much posting about it last year about this time.
Would cool to see a newly designed C1a1 style semi auto only.... Would it pass CFC scrutiny? It would take deep pockets to find out I'm thinkin

So the lower on a FAL is'nt prohibited?

The upper on the FAL is legally the firearm (it is the part that is registered), and that is technically the only prohibited part. The lower, trigger group, barrel assy and gas system are just regular gun parts.

It would be interesting to use the FAL lower (but have it the registered part), and manufacture an upper based on the SVT 40, or something like that, maybe a newer design, even base the upper on an AR15 upper (well, the bolt/barrel assembly).
