So for the last few months I've been getting familiar with my SAF mini and on the long weekend thought I'd take it for a walk and put everything together in a video review.

Please watch the video before calling me an evil law-breaking irresponsible gun owner

I've spent some time with a few of the FAMAE series firearms now and I'm liking them more and more as an "unusual Canadian firearm" that the guys down south don't get to play with.

I called the RCMP and asked for an ATT to the GPS coordinates of Milk River Natural area for the purpose of filming. They asked me to send them an email with all the relevant details and numbers, which I did.

48 hours later I had a STATT with a number of conditions that let me take the gun out.

  • It was only for this SAF.
  • I had to follow all the transport regs too and from.
  • It was valid for a 3 day window over the long weekend.
  • My destination a set of GPS coordinates as the milk river natural area
  • I was there for the purpose of filming
  • And as a result, I was only allowed to fire blank ammunition.

I have a feeling that this will be the only one of these STATT's I get. As after this video gets around I presume lots of people will be trying similar things and who know's when the CFO's generosity might run out.

But, I'm pretty pleased to have had the experience, and it just goes to show: it's always worth a shot

Of course, I still had to agree with the first youtube comment:

it is absolutely insulting to you and all Canadians you had to fire blanks simply because it was outside of a range....take note all Americans watching that is what happens when you let liberals into power

Cool video TVPP.

I'd love to pick one of these guys up, but I can't seem to get passed the 5-rnd mag changes.

Re: ATT. How was the overall process in getting it approved for the purpose of filming this. Did you get a "WTF" back from your CFO or where they fairly receptive about it?

Hey TV welcome back, thanks for the fresh vid, love the lovely Albertan landscape too, really nice, can you give us a gps location (long, lat) on that if you can? Makes me want to move there if only there were no winters.

Cool vid, but god I wish that thing came with a longer barrel hey!

I would sure sell my jr carbine on ee pretty quick if they made one like that.

Seller and Bellot 9mm blanks from WSS. Guess they were designed for a starter pistol?

Hmm, strange. I would tend to think that it doesn't matter what gun its being used in...If the firing pin hits the primer, it should go off. Unless I'm missing something.

Definitely did not contact the primer. I haven't tried them in the handgun yet but these are oddly short casings.

I only bought the blanks for this video. Not a lot of use for me!

Calling it a Swiss designed gun is really stretching it...

It's a chopped up Chilean blowback 9mm conversion of a Swiss-licensed design at best.

Nice setting for the video however.

Nice review, and must be nice to be able to get out and go 'bush' with a snarly little sub gun. I used to hike like that with an AK.

PS - re your sigline about IWI, you should really add "but I would".

Nice video. $2000.00 +, 5 round mags, restricted classification is the unfortunate down side for this firearm.

Shame the blanks didn't work for you. Should have tried the IVI that are available. Kinda sucks to go through all the hoops to get the gun there and not even shoot blanks.

Good practise for next time though; test shoot blanks at the range beforehand. And a blank firing device for true semi auto action (if possible with that gun) would have been a very cool video to watch. Still nice job though.

Ah ok, gotcha. I had no idea that they were shorter casings. I myself don't have any use for them so I never saw any :)

Those are sweet rigs.

Someone needs to do an in-depth thread on the pistol cal SMG's. SAF/TP9/BRS99/Skorpion/Vector and etc.

For those who noted the 5 rd mag limit and the restricted status. Consider this. You could perhaps have a gunsmith make an 18.5" barrel fitted and have it reclassified. That would look better on the larger SAF but you could. As for the mags. I would think that with some effort from a good smith that the magwell could be altered to accept 9mm lar15 pistol mags. I only held and shot an SAF once but from my limited experience I think these things could be done.
