Hello Gents, im in the midst of filling out my pal application, and i notice nowhere does it say that you cant have a family member as a reference. Is it just bad form to have family as a reference?

I've done it, so long as it's not your spouse it's totally fine. There are a few posts buried back a few pages from people saying they've used both parents with phone calls from the cfc being passed around the house in one go.

If your Children are over 18, they can be your reference as well. The phone was passed around the house as one poster said. My Children were surprised at the numerous questions, recall approx. 10-15 questions. Yes or No answers! I was their reference as well for their RPAL applications.

Same here - I used my two sons as references without any issues. In fact it sped up the whole process considerably. As long as they're over 18, it's fine.

it just seems so easy that it shouldnt be aloud for some reason. i think thats the way it is on the passport application, that your family members cant be your references

They used to really not want family members...they also wanted only people with certain professions. I'm guessing there may have been too many complaints or something, not enough people who knew doctors and dentists for a decade. Also, I heard the family thing they now accept, because often a family member is more likely to know of the person having mental health issues, severe stress from work or problems at home.

and more than likely if your family trusts you with firearms, then so can the government, cause family usually first to go in a dispute haha....

easy?

It wasn't easy for my Children to be peppered with 15 +- consecutive questions about whether their Father was a criminal, depressed, violent etc... in the past. My Daughter seemed uncomfortable, almost defensive with the intrusive nature of the questions. It opened her eyes how strict our laws already are. Most Children know their Parents more than anyone!

Same with the passport application. Was very surprised to find that a professional reference is no longer needed.

My brother told me the weirdest question they asked was whether or not I was "intrigued by violence".

My mother-in-law was a reference for me. The lady who did her phone interview was taken back a bit I think when she asked how she knew me :D

Whomever you choose as a reference, be sure to give them a heads-up about the sort of telephone interview that they can expect to receive, because - to the uninitiated - it may feel semi-hostile, with a sarcastic interviewer, and loaded with negative and leading questions and an overt prejudice against public possession of firearms.

I am serious.

Forewarned is forearmed.
