A few of us are taking a Fly in moose hunt Sept 19-24. We will be fairly far north in the province of Saskatchewan. Last time we hunted, we had the bulls already with cows on the 27th of September. Normally we see peak rut around the 1st of October when we hunt the south of the province (around Prince Albert), so we figured we would go a bit earlier as we are nearly 400 KM further north.

What is your experience with far north hunting for the early moose rut as far as dates? A quick line on the map puts my hunting area on about the same latitude of Thompson Manitoba, Fort Nelson BC or about 50KM south of Fort Mac Murray.

lol 'far north'. They are hard on the sauce in the far north already. In the south you have about 10 days to go.

By Provincial standards this latitude is far north as 95% of this provinces moose hunting goes on far south of this area. Yukon and NWT moose are a bit different in size and rutting time. When it the peak rut in the territories?

I always like the 3rd week of sept when I was guiding in the Yukon and NWT. they can be kind of hard to pull away from there cows earlier so you gotta move in on them. Once the cows get breed and the Bulls are moving looking for a hot cow the calling can get crazy.

You should be set pretty good for timing on your hunt. Hopefully the weather is cool and the moose are active. I had good luck with bulls answering the last week of sept last fall. Hoping for the same this year.
