I bought a Rem 700 XCR TLR in .223 for the range and maybe some varmint shooting, but haven't shot it yet.

I've always been more of a wood and blue kind of guy, so am thinking of selling it and replacing it with something in more traditional wood/blue.

From what I've seen, most of the older heavy barrel rifles in .223 have slow twist rate barrel of 1 in 12." The XCR has 1 in 9." I'd like the faster twist rate for the option of some heavier bullets.

Does anyone know of any wood/blued heavy barrel rifles that came in a faster twist rate? Older or new. I'm partial to Rem 700 or Winchester M70, but am open to other suggestions.
 
In that link it says its 1/12 twist.
The cz 527 would be my pick. I have an american its also a 1/12 twist but the varmint has a 1/9 twist. Awesome guns for the price and the trigger is very nice after some playing with it.
 
A Sako varmint can come with an 8 twist or order a model 21 or 51 Cooper with the twist you want. If the Sako or Coopers are a little more than your budget allows you can look for a Tikka T3 hunter model with an 8 twist.
 
Savage has it together as far as fast enough twist rates for 223 go. Like others though they're making less and less wood and blue. You could get a model 12 V for cheap and change the stock to a Boyds walnut if you really must have wood and blue. Or look at the stainless laminate models if that works. They all come no slower than 9 twist with 7 and 8 available in some models.

I still haven't done anything because my spare time has been spent shooting trap. I've been looking at various rifle on line. Certainly a Cooper would be nice, maybe a Sako or Tikka, but my intention was to sell the XCR and get something that would cost me less overall, but still be a decent shooter.

Anyone have a Ruger MkII SS heavy barrel laminate? I know, I know, not blued, but at least it has some wood. I've read that they were 1-12" but newer versions are 1-9" Can anyone confirm this? How are they compared to a Remington? I've read the triggers need some work. Anything I should be aware of?
 
I have many M77's... I far prefer them over Rem 700's and like them as much as the M70's... I have many of the Hawkeye Frontier, AW's and Predator's... I believe that you are referring to the Predator model and it is an excellent rifle... the .223 is a 9 twist...

Yes, looking at Savage now too. The Low Profile Varmint looks good. Or the Ruger Predator laminate. Both are stainless with laminate.

Or, maybe I'll just keep my Rem 700 and put a wood or laminate stock on it. It does have the 40-x trigger. It's supposed to be pretty good for a factory trigger, externally adjustable down to 1.5lbs. Also it is stainless, but has the black TriNyte finish which is closer to 'blue' than either the polished stainless or matte finish of the Ruger.

How do the Savage and Ruger triggers compare to the Rem 40x?
 
Anything dedicated to a 1-7" twist rate would most likely come from an aftermarket barrel. 1-9" is common and shoots up to 70 grain projectiles. 80 grain need either 7 or 8 twist rate but are unusable with smaller hunting projectiles like 50 grain and below just because rotational speed will make them explode apart after it leaves the barrel.

I had a 1-9" Remington SPS Tactical rifle that shot 75 grain bullets really, really well.

Why not just restock it with a factory take-off or a Boyds?

Just what I am thinking.

Have been reading about Ruger Hawkeye Predator, and Savage Low Profile Varmint. Both look appealing, other than not being blued. I had kinda decided on the Savage. From what I've read, the Accu-trigger is good, and the Savage also comes with a detachable magazine, which I would like. Try to find either in stores, that's another thing.

I had been hoping that selling the Rem 700, and getting something more to my liking would have been a wash financially. Putting more into the Rem wasn't the route I had thought of going. I think though, it will be close to what I really want with a laminate or wood stock swap, and maybe even a magazine conversion. It does have a good 40x trigger, is stainless with the black Trinyte coating. Should be good all round range and varmint gun. I could sell the Bell & Carlson stock to recoup a little too.

So now I'm looking for a factory VLS laminate stock. If I can't find one, I'll look at a Boyd's.
