Trying to get an idea of what the best make is for a .22 pistol under $500. I am leaning towards a browning buck mark.

The Ruger Mark III and 22/45 are good. They just take a bit of getting used to on the disassembly/re-assembly. Very accurate and pretty tough. The Browning is the main competitor for these, and is comparable in every way.

A Ruger Single Six would be cool if you can find one, and find one for under $500. I don't own one but I'd love to try one out. it's kind of a cowboy-style revolver.

I personally find the Smith and Beretta .22LR auto pistols to be fugly ugly. The ones we can get in Canada anyway.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the Walther P22. I love this little gun and have had more fun with it than almost any other gun I own. I know I am in the minority on this, but get I still say get a P22, throw away that "compensator" thing, have a gunsmith cut the barrel and barrel sleave to 106mm, buy some CCI Mini Mags, keep it properly cleaned and lubed and you are in for a fun time. Maybe that is more work than most people want in a .22LR, but I love my P22.

The Sig Mosquito is kind of a bigger, heavier version of the P22. Some people like it better because it is sized more like a "real" auto pistol, and the grip is quite a bit bigger. The design is similar to the P22 - a fixed barrel that, outwardly, mimics the appearance of a Browning-type auto pistol.

The P22 and Mosquito are generally a bit more than $500 in Canada though.

Something like a S&W 617, a 10 round revolver, is probably one of the best .22LR handguns, but it is the same price as it's .357mag big brothers... like $1,000! You might be able to find an S&W Model 17, which is sort of the same thing but which I don't think is made any more, for around $400-500 bucks used.

Hi Ghostie,

If you pay cash, you can get the Sig Mosquito under $500. Maybe around $480 at Reliable Gun. I have seen a couple on EE, too.

You are right. The grip on the Mosquito is bigger and fits both small hands and big hands better. My wife told me that it was the best grip so far among all the guns she had tried (with her smaller hands).

Next time maybe I should try your P22...

I'm very pleased with my Ruger MkII 5.5" bull barrel .22 pistol.

I also have a NIB Ruger 22/45 MkIII but I have yet to bust a cap on it...

We (wifey and I) have a Ruger MK III target, Browning Buckmark Camper and a Browning Buckmark Lite Splash. All function flawlessly and hold nicely.
The "Splash" gets the nod, though, as it's carbon fibre barrel makes it easy to point and the grip is perfect. ($495 @ Shooter's Choice).

Have fun, and may I suggest, buy them all and many more! :dancingbanana:
P.S. Also have a Taurus Tracker, heavy but shoots very well, if you're interested in a wheel gun.

I agree with IM_Lugger.
The Buckmark is a good choice but so is the Ruger. It comes down to personal taste.
I second the Taurus Tracker for a revolver, but it's a bit muzzle heavy in .22

Buck Mark sounds like a good idea .... I have one on my list to order ...
Buck Mark Contour 5.5 URX. Hopefully it'll show up soon ....

My tastes run to a Ruger MKI Standard Model, CZ75B with a Kadet Conversion Unit, and S&W Model 43 (a revolver you can't easily own in Canada). I want 22s to be accurate but mostly I want then to be fun to shoot. Regards, Richard:D

you cant go wrong with a used high standard citation or trophy, if they are in good shape, you will find them in the 4 to 500 dollar range but they are excellent shooters I did see some on marstars site and there is a ton of info on them

My vote's for the Ruger MKIII 22/45 4.5" slab side bbl.

At $309CDN NIB it's a pretty good deal. I've pounded about 3 bricks through it now with a few FTE's (ordered an Exact Edge Extractor as a fix). If you plan to spend more, I like my S&W 41.

I've got three Rugers, a S&W model 41 and a High Standard Citation (and a bunch of other .22s not worth mentioning). I like the High Standard the best. Feels the best in my hand. I like the balance. Shoots real well. It can be found at reasonable prices used.

That’s the one I’m looking at too. I just wish it was available in stainless steel.

can't go wrong with either the buckmark or the ruger...I have one of each a buckmark 5.5 contour and a ruger mkIII 5.5

As stated previously a used Hi-Standard Citation, Trophy or Victor are definitely worth a look. There is nothing wrong with the Browning or Ruger either.

I shoot a S&W M-41, which is a great gun - just a little pricey compared to the ones above - and bulk box .22 gives it serious indigestion.
