The Ruger Mark III and 22/45 are good. They just take a bit of getting used to on the disassembly/re-assembly. Very accurate and pretty tough. The Browning is the main competitor for these, and is comparable in every way.
A Ruger Single Six would be cool if you can find one, and find one for under $500. I don't own one but I'd love to try one out. it's kind of a cowboy-style revolver.
I personally find the Smith and Beretta .22LR auto pistols to be fugly ugly. The ones we can get in Canada anyway.
Personally, I am a huge fan of the Walther P22. I love this little gun and have had more fun with it than almost any other gun I own. I know I am in the minority on this, but get I still say get a P22, throw away that "compensator" thing, have a gunsmith cut the barrel and barrel sleave to 106mm, buy some CCI Mini Mags, keep it properly cleaned and lubed and you are in for a fun time. Maybe that is more work than most people want in a .22LR, but I love my P22.
The Sig Mosquito is kind of a bigger, heavier version of the P22. Some people like it better because it is sized more like a "real" auto pistol, and the grip is quite a bit bigger. The design is similar to the P22 - a fixed barrel that, outwardly, mimics the appearance of a Browning-type auto pistol.
The P22 and Mosquito are generally a bit more than $500 in Canada though.
Something like a S&W 617, a 10 round revolver, is probably one of the best .22LR handguns, but it is the same price as it's .357mag big brothers... like $1,000! You might be able to find an S&W Model 17, which is sort of the same thing but which I don't think is made any more, for around $400-500 bucks used.
