I'm going to try a single shot 12 ga this year with a 1oz slug @ 30 yds

Any chance of you using a Brenneke slug?

A lot of 'nutz like that for bear defense, you could be our guinea pig to find out if it actually penetrates well. If we don't hear from you after you head out hunting, we'll know we should switch to another brand in our shotties. :p

This year I want to try out my stainless steel rifles...

Marlin 1895GS 45-70 18.5" barrel
LSI Puma M92 454 Casull 20" barrel
Rem 700 LSS 375 Rem Ultra Mag 26" barrel

I'll also be packing my 7.5" & 4.25" SRH's in 454 Casull and may have to deal with a problem bear again while I'm out working. I am interested in how a 405gr WLNGC @ 1200fps from a 4.25" barrel will do in a defense situation.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the supreme bear killers that are the .223 and 7.62X39. Newton's physics and all, any action has an equal reaction. You can postulate this scientific FACT to mean that shooting a bear with a large caliber round such as a .338 or 45-70 will not kill the bear, but make it ANGRIER at you!!! Slow and steady wins the race, and that's why you should kill bear with an SKS or AR15.

I think both those calibers are overkill for a wee black bear, better save them for polar bears where they have a proven track record.
