I'm thinking of sending Ted Gaillard another project and after reading the thread about the favorite carrying rifle I realize I don't have one.

My general idea so far is a rifle similar to the Ruger frontier but with a barrel a bit longer, maybe a bolt action matted with a flutted barrel in a contour 1 step heavier than normal to keep the balance with the short barrel, not sure on caliber yet but maybe 350 mag then could open it up to 35 WSM if desired later.

This rifle needs to be short and light and will be used on moose and bear.

The only rifle that I could use as a candidate for this is a Tikka M65 in 7mm mag so i'll probably end up selling it to fund this project unless I get inspired to do something with that rifle.

I was just discussing a project rifle with guntech...

He mentioned that neither he nor Ted think much of fluting...

I think I still want it though... LOL

Sorry for the DP...

I was thinking about transforming my 30-06 mountain rifle into a 280 Ackley Improved. I have a friend who shoots one and he gets amazing velocities... borderline 7RemMag velocities with less powder.

I figured on a sporter or light magnum contour, then fluted to save weight.

Dennis has me reconsidering that, and suggested I call Ted Gaillard to discuss it with him also.

Now that's professionalism!

From what I understood speaking with Ted during my last project is that it's an unneeded step that saves only a little weight and only helps in cooling marginaly, I got it done because it looks good and the little weight and little better cooling seemed like a good enough reason to me considering it was a custom rifle and I figured I might as well go all out. I wouldn't flute a barrel that was already made but since the barrel was being made from scratch I figured might as well as I would kick my ass later if I didn't.

The rifle he built for me is a stainless Rem 700 that had Ted's accurizing package, trigger worked, 26" stainless fluted barrel installed chambered for the 338 Ultra mag, the works bead blasted to match, mag box massaged, and bedded.

Interesting topic Max. That is why I started the other post, just to see what everyones favorites are. I have also been brain storming up something new for general all around use.

I enjoy reading everyones opinion. Lots of great ideas out there.

I already have a 35 Whelen, otherwise I'd build this rifle.....

Remington 700 SA or Model Seven action with 20"-21" bbl in 358Winchester. McMillan or Bansner [straight comb] fiberglass stock w/ Decelerator. Banded front barrel sight. Barrel band sling thing. Weaver Grand Slam Bases. Leupold VXIII in 1.5x5. Burris Zee rings, and one of those XS peep sight thingies to fit the rear Weaver for back-up.

different action and caliber, but same idea, a light short mid-bore

pre-64 m70 rebored from 30-06 to 9.3x62, bobbed to 20" and in a laminated stock. weighs 7-10 as in the pic, McM edge on the way.

Very nice rifle rgv, I thought of that caliber also, will depend on what action i can get my hands on, I have a Tikka M65 in 7mm mag but I can't think of anything to do with it but sell it.

That sounds like a great package, but I am curious as to your choice of a barrel band sling mount. If the reason is cosmetic, that is fine, and a sense of style is as valid a reason as any to add a component to our rifles. My 602 didn't need a quarter rib, but I like the look. One advantage of the barrel mounted sling is, that when the rifle is conventionally slung, the height of the barrel above the head is reduced making it easier to move through thick cover, however, that would be a minor advantage for a short rifle. I like the "African" look, but a sling attachment on the barrel would not be my choice as it precludes using the sling as a shooting aid.

Yes, cosmetic, pure and simple. I like the looks of it. :)

I have a 280AI done on a remy 700.The barrel is a Ron Smith stainless no.3 contour {.700" @ muzzle} finished at 26" with 8 deep flutes cut.The rifle in a Bansner stock with leupy M8 6X42 in talley LWGHT rings weighs 7lb 6 oz.I just had the chamber recut and my smith commented on how light the barrel was for a heavier contour.Flutes do more than look good IMHO.RB
