Favorite Deer Calibre/bullet?

TimC,
You know, I understand the benefits that can(might) be gained from higher than normal sectional density. That's why I have a .375 H&H and .416 Rigby. I also know that if you take those same heavy for caliber bullets and improve the shape (super high B.C) long distance performance can be enhanced. That's why I built my 1-8" twist 22/243 Middlested. What I don't understand is how any of this applies to a 140 grain 7mm bullets which have neither of those two characteristics. Those dots just don't connect.:p The numbers are decidedly average on that one. That doesn't mean that it isn't an effective bullet, because it is. Just like a whole bunch of other bullets.

You know I did write almost perfect round! 7 mm Mauser is a very good case to run medium weight large game bullets through! I missed out on a Boer mauser much to my regret it showed up deactivated a few years later.
In my opinion humble as it is and mainly gained from deer than the classroom, the 6.5 swede is a superb round. I stick to 140 gn oadings as all of my shooting is close up. the furtherst out was measured at 140 yards, I have estimated others at nearly twice that but only estimated.
I do my best to keep the round in regular use and have encouraged 3 stalkers in the last 2 years to buy in that calibre. One even went so far as to get a 6.5/.284 wildcat. He really does the job in Scotland out in the open. I like a .303 but only as a traditionalist. I have recently loaded 125 grain .311 sierra gamekings in over 44.3 gns IMR 4895. It did the biz on saturday last.

With your 22/243 and 1 in 8 barrel are you loading heavy bullets? a friend of mine prefers (I think) 90 gn vlds and is trying for 900 yards this year at match rifle.

What I was on about was that the evidence shown in those lectures with the radar and graph plotting (which even showed which bullets were stable at which distance without resorting to paper screens every 100 yards) proved that the long, small calibre bullets with a high sd and good bc remained stable the longest.
Must rush I have to shift pelts from the freezer, the wife needs to fill it with groceries!

358 Winchester shooting a 200gr. Remington round nosed Core-lokt infront of a near max charge of IMR 3031. I havent tried it yet although I'm convinced it will be a great close cover brush buster leaving big holes.

Last year I shot my buck with a factory 358 200gr. Silvertip. I have used 180gr. RN Corelokts in the past with great sucess from a 30-06.

Hopefully by this time next week I'll have proven the round with a deer hanging.:)

Has been for years and I don't think anyone will change my mind.
7X57 w/ Federal Premium 140 grain Nosler Partition.

Hasn't let me down yet!

I agree! Shot a moose and doe this year with my 7x57, 160gr Nosler Partition. Both pieces jumped off for about 40 meter and dropped dead. Meat damage was minimal. But you need to place a partition properly. It's not a very explosive bullet and the shock impact is not very high, but a bone won't stop it. I could not find one bullet or fragment. They all went right through.

Good hunting:)
