Favorite single shot rifle for deer hunting?

As i am new to hunting with firearms - I use a crossbow, what single shot rifles would be a good choice for deer on V.I.? I don't want a cannon, more of a bush gun. I am going to pick up a lever gun, but figured I'd open my options as well. Also thinking about a shotgun, but that is down the road. Luckily I have a supportive wife, she won't be hunting, but is getting her PAL at the same time as me. So we will be getting a .22 as a learning gun, lots of range time in our future.
