Well, I have a custome mauser in 284 that's currently not shooting well at all. Assuming I can't fix it, I'll probably look to re-barrel it. Now, the thing feeds the .284 case so well that it seems a shame to go with a different cartridge family, plus the oddball longer-than-a-short-action but shorter-than-a-long-action M48 seems ideally suited to the 284 family.

So, with that in mind, I have to pick which 284-based cartridge to go with if I do decide to re-barrel. This is going to be a sporting gun, so no heavy barrel or thousand yard shooting. I already have perfectly suitable varmint, deer, moose and dangerous game rifles, so I'm not looking for this rifle to fit any particular niche, and I'm also not looking for an 'all around' cartridge.

even though it predates it, what about the 7.5x55 swiss?

That's what I was going to suggest. I use .284 brass for my K31, works like a charm. Dies are easy to get and cheap, standard .308 bullets....can't go wrong.:)

The 30-284 is indistinguishable from the 7.5x55 Swiss.

I wish someone would make a cartridge with the same rebated rim and body size, but about 2.50" (standard action length) long.
