I hunt on Vancouver Island were there is a shotguns with SHOT ONLY restriction. I have shot lots of our small Blacktail deer this way and have found it to be a lethal killer if used within its limitations. One of the most important things to check is how your particular gun patterns as they seem to be all maddeningly different. I had an old CIL 12 gauge pump with a full choke that patterned buckshot very well. Other guns with the same choke have proven to be dismal failures in this department. I now use a Remington 870 with a "deer slayer" barrel. It has a cylinder bore (no choke) and is fitted with front and rear sights. It patterns well at 25 yards and further, perhaps just inside 40 yards which would still be very effective on our small deer.
I purchased a box of Federal's flite control buckshot and test shot it today and thought it might be interesting for other people to see the results.

I used a piece of cardboard that is 28 inches high and a standard 50 foot air rifle target to aim at.
The first photo shows a standard Federal 3 inch OO buckshot load. The pellets have been marked with masking tape.
I then fired on of the flight control shells. You can see the pellets have a much tighter pattern.
The big hole is a slug...just checking to see if the gun was still on.

The second picture shows the Federal flight control at 50 yards. I took a large black felt marker to show the were the pellets hit the cardboard. They are all within a 30 inch diameter circle. I have to say I'm impressed. long shots do not happen in the thick cover I hunt in as my longest shot has been well within 25 yards.
