Hi folks,

Anyone had a look at the new Federal "Hammer Down" ammunition? Developed apparently specifically for lever actions and seems to be quite interesting.

Was looking at .44 mag

270 gr bullet at a muzzle velocity of 1715 fps looks impressive. and considerably faster than Hodgdon's .44 mag rifle data of 270gr @ 1637 fps.

Looks interesting. Anyone know which powder they are using?

I've put some rounds thru my bolt gun in 44. POI was about 4-5" lower at 50y then most of the 240gr stuff I use. I didn't have a lot of time to experiment with it as I didn't want to change my load type this close to the deer hunt. I'll play with it more next spring.

I've bought some in 30-30 and 45/70, the 30-30 hits right with the rest of the ammo I use at 50 yards open sights.45/70 hits hard at 100 yards but 2 inches lower the 325 grain htx.seems to be hard hitting ammo.

I just picked some up in .357 MAG, and it states the velocities on the box as being from a 20" barrel. I haven't shot it yet, but it sounds really good for lever guns, and I generally like the quality of Federal ammo. I just watched a video review of it, and the fellow was shooting some hogs with the various calibers of "Hammer Down". They all seemed effective from .357 all the way up to the 45/70.

Link below if interested.

Interesting stuff, folks.

I'm curious as to be legal for the larger deer species we hunt in the UK we need 1,700ft lbs muzzle energy.

So, if you look at Hodgdon rifle data, it seems you need to be using lighter bullets in a 20" bbl rifle.

(NB I feel a 240-270gr load would be idea, but getting the muzzle energy seems difficult for the legal argument)

I like Federal ammo and have had really good results with .223 Rem 62 gr Federal Fusion for smaller deer and also my 257 Roberts shot well with the Federal Premium loaded with 120gr Nosler Partition so I'd be keen to try this.
