As I was browsing through Cabela's last week I noticed "Federal Gold Cup Match" on sale and three boxes over I noticed "Federal Gold Cup Target" with a regular price $3 less than the on sale match. What is the difference both are 50round red boxes, same speed and 40gr LRN. Is this one of those; these were made on a friday and these on a Thursday deals or is there an actual preformence difference?

Note: the target is not the white boxed auto-loader stuff but packaged identically to the match grade stuff.

The federal match with the silver bullet on the front with match on the bullet.
It is made in Germany.
Rumour is it is made in the RWS factory. So same as RWS 50 match.
As for the the federal match made in the USA.
Tried it. Not impressed

What is most likely in stock at Cabelas is the Federal Match 922A, there is yet another grade higher which is Federal Ultra Match UM22. They are both made in Germany, likely at the RWS facility. Someone on Rimfire Central deconstructed some of the Federal Ammo and compared it to RWS R-50, the powder contained is not the same between the rounds and I believe the lead also had a different shade to it. So, while made by RWS to a high standard, it does not seem to be simply re-packaged R-50 but it's own distinct product. European manufacturers are much better than the American ones, it is indeed a better round than the Federal Target.

Same here. The 2 22's I tried it in didn't like it one bit. 3" groups at 50 yards when the rifle can do 1/2.

Some of the first 922A that I bought has R50 on one of the flaps on the end opposite the silver bullet.
It took three tries before Federal admitted it was made by RWS.
The Ultra Match is UM22 but I would be inclined to believe this is R100 (probably for the Biathletes). The UM22 is in the Bass Pro website and is in USD.
At the stores they tend to open every brick so you would be wise to get all the same lot. Open the box on the end with the silver bullet and the Lot number is stamped into the flap.
Or you might buy three different lots and see what your rifle likes.
The Federal Target is nothing to write home about and there is also Federal Target HV at about 1200 fps. Nothing special either.

I have shot R50 and the Federal Match in comparison tests and two figures that I recall was Federal - 0.76" and R50 - 0.79" for five shots at 100 yards but have found that on any given day the results could be reversed.

When it is on sale at "Clabeas" if is tough to beat . . .

The one and only time Federal Gold Medal Match was worth more than spit, was the special run they made for the 1988 Olympics in California.

Had a strange little dimple on the base. Since then back to s##t. Americans are devoted to plinking, and not anything approaching Olympic grade.
Very strange for a country with a highly popular gun culture.

Look to Lapua/SK/Eley/RWS. All of them from overseas locations.
