Hey fellas,
I'm wondering if someone could explain why Federal uses a NP protected point bullet on their 300WM cartridge. I understand the reason for the canalure that is also on the bullet, but not the flattened point. Why not a spitzer?
Just curious.
Jon

The protected point Partition was designed specifically for the 300Win Mag. The Win Mag case is too long to allow the regular Partition 180 to seat short enough in the case without it falling into the case it's self. You can thank Winchester for this quirk if they had only gone the route everyone had anticipated by necking up the 7mm Rem Mag(308 Norma/30-338) the COL vs. Case length issue would not exist.

Not really an issue for a lot of handloaders. Even though it exceeds the (paper) OAL specs, a lot of guns have enough room for the Spitzer

Yes prosper, thats true. Handload NP spitzers shot very well from my rifle, which is a Browning A-Bolt SS.
A friend gave me a rainy day, afternoon session, reload 101 course, and we loaded up some partitions for me to try out. For initial reduced load rounds, I was very impressed with the results.
I expect that I won't see the same results with these Federal 180 grainers, but for now they will do the job their intended to do just fine.:)
Thanks,
Jon
