It is generally thought that Federal pistol primers have a softer shell than other brands. Is this true of their rifle primers as well?

Reason I ask is that when shooting my Shiloh 50-70 Military Rifle recently, I had a few failures to ignite. The primers appeared to have been struck hard enough, but no 'BANG!".

The same rounds fired without fail in my 50-70 carbine.

Federal uses a softer cup and a more sensitive compound.

it is the go to primer for any application where there might be an ignition issue, like a light hammer in a double action pistol.

There are other causes of a failure. is the bullet touching the rifling? That will soften the blow a lot.

Like most things, good for one application is bad for another. Federal rifle primers would be my last choice for any semi-autos
with a floating firing pin. (i.e. AR15 pattern, M1 Garand, M14 pattern, etc.

Aged/weak hammer springs or worn firing pin tips can also be a cause of ignition issues too.

The action of my Farmingdale Shiloh MR was brought up to modern spec at Big Timber. It now has a lighter hammer fall than before. The carbine is current and has a heavier hammer fall.

The suspect primers are CCI Large Rifle Magnum. I was experimenting to see if they would be beneficial over standard primers. IMHO - No, especially if they don't go off at all.

I've had more misfires with Large and Magnum CCI primers than all the others put together. Now I'm sure that someone will have had perfect luck with them, and to that all I can say is that I've had a standing offer to swap them 2 for 1 for many years and no one has taken me up on it.
