Hey everyone, I've been reloading .40 and have been using the cci small pistol primers, but seeing as almost every gun store in kw is out of cci I'm out of luck. However, the stores do have federal primers in, but I have no experience with these primers and if they work well? I know that for some reason I cannot reload any federal brass with cci primers because they just fall out, is there any reason federal primers might not work for me?

Yeah I guess I should have mentioned I'm using a lee pro 1000 progressive. Should I still try federal primers? Or not worth the risk?

I used them for several years in a Lee Pro 1000 with no problems. A number of people feel that Lee is just being overly cautious.
However, if you use them in your Lee, as noted they are a softer primer & if you feel some resistance then stop & check. They don't take kindly to being crushed.

Federal primers are just fine, even in a Lee progressive. You won't have any primer accidents as long as you aren't overly ham-fisted in seating primers.

Federal primers are commonly used with double action revolvers that have been tuned for very light trigger pulls, as they are a bit more sensitive than other brands. Other than that, primers are primers for the most part.

Federal are a softer primer.. Great for Revolvers that you have tuned the trigger and hammer right down... I believe Lee is being very cautious as well...

Please be very carefull when seating your primer. Specially when you have non toxic brass. As the primer pocket is crimped, do not try to force a primer in because it might go off. I never thought it would but it finally did. Scared the crap out of me.

Federal primers are not soft, its a single base primer but more sensitive, and more heat. never had a problem with these primers, its my preferred make, alittle bit expensive though.

The only time I ever had a primer explosion was with a Lee Pro1000 21 years ago. Sorry can't remember the primer brand. Anyways, regardless of primer brand, I would wear eye protection when reloading...can't shoot with no eyes.:D
