Federal's first cartridge: the 338 federal.

Currently only Tikka and Sako chamber for it. Unless a major north american manufacturer or two starts chambering their mainstream rifle models in it, it will surely die

Well, well, I just saw that the press release is dating from Dec 2nd 2005. It's weird cause the article that I read gave me the clear impression that it was something brand new. Federal even placed an ad in there boasting about the New boss in town... Ah well  It's kinda funny that I have never heard of this cartridge before as I try to be somewhat up to date with those things.

The 338 Federal is on my 'to buy - someday - list.' It's a great round, and one that should be ideal for 90% of all hunting tasks around here.

Along with a dozen or so others, most of which will require a customer barrel or chambering.

Was on my to buy list also. Then I seen the 375 Ruger.I will have the .375 before I get a .338.

Here where I hunt in Ont where shots are usually under 100yrds I see hunters with 270s,243s,and even WSMs.Hell I am guilty of this also with a 25-06 where the 338 Fed,35 Rem,358 Win,and 444 would be just the ticket.

I am not sure what drives people to buy or noy buy a specific cartrige. If people bought a cartrige to suit their hunting needs, terrain, and how far they are comfortable shooting there would be alot more people using the 338 Fed,or the 35s.

It would/will be a shame to see the 338 Fed,and 375 Ruger fade as did the 35s.What more can I say:confused:

Kinda sorta. Just 150 or so fps behind. It's the same as the 308 to the 30'06, the 280 to the 7mm08, the 358 to the whelen, etc.

federals first cartridge? wasn't there a 9mm federal?

It could be, since it's not a rifle cartridge. Here's the actual headline:

" Federal Premium Introduces .338 Federal: The First Centerfire Rifle Cartridge to Bear Its Name"

I built a 338-08 about 6 years ago.

It's one of my favorite rifles.

That little cartridge is a real sleeper. decent velocities with 225 grn bullets and handles the 250 grn bullets very well.

It will knock a moose down with the same aplomb as the 338 win mag out to 300M.

I like it a lot. But I also like my 338-06 and my 7-08 and my 308 win and my 300 WSM and my 6.5x55 and my,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, bearhunter

Just before I went to the 2006 SHOT show, this cartridge was anounced. Someone here mentioned the 9mm Federal rimmed round that came and went a while back.
When I was down there, I got talking to one of the Fed sales reps, and he mentioned this beiing "the first ever round to carry the Federal name". I mentioned the "other" first one, and he sort of smiled, and said "Yes, you are right".
I mention it in my SHOTShow report, link in sig line below
