I just picked up a DPMS LR-308 with 24 inch heavy stainless barrel but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Looks like it's built well though. I've heard they are tack drivers once you find the food they like.
 
A used Gen1 Armalite SASS would fit that price range.

The new Gen II Ar-10a Target model as well (actually @ $1850 it's considerably less). A quick change of the A2 stock to a PRS & forehand rail and you'd be in business as far as it goes for the look.
