Feedback on SKS sight upgrade options

Hello, after not giving my trusty Russian SKS much attention took it shooting recently. My buddy was hitting little spinners at 100 yards 4 out of 6 shoots with the irons!! I am so spoiled using my AR sights or optics, but he was amazed how well it shot.

So here is the million dollar question, what SKS sight upgrades are a waste of money?

Was lookinng at a Tech 200 rear M1A style sight, a thinner front post, or even just a rear peep sight swapping out the factory ramp? Then I saw a full rail that replaces the rear ramp sight and wondered if an aimpoint and or flip up AR sight would work on a full rail.

So looking for first hand experience, and what would be considered a waste of money.

Really like my SKS, but want to make it a bit easier for my eyes to shoot.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a good barrel there.
The full rail is great for optics, but you'll need a cheek riser, and your front sight becomes useless. AR type glass is perfect here.
I love my Tech Sight 200, as it doubles the arm length between front and rear sights. Instead of trying to line up rear, front and target, you just peer through the TS and put the front post on target. Way easier for follow up shots. Also, the peep close to your eye acts like a small aperture, increasing the depth of field. That way, I just wear my long distance prescription and the front post is still in focus.
That doesn't work with the peep at the rear ramp location, so it's no good for me. Young eyes might handle it though.
I haven't heard of anyone succeeding with the gas tube picatinny rail.
The picatinny on the receiver cover can work, only if you really fastidiously trim the front claws for a super tight fit.
Once again, you have to do the prairie dog stretch without a good cheek rest.

Tech sights. Mine can hit about an 18 inch plate at 300m 3 out of 5. Downside is the disassembly when its time to clean.

So what about the Williams Peep sight? Is it too far forward?

That's the general consensus, yupp. Haven't tried it but reports aren't the best. Mag wedge makes the Raveneye sight which is basically the same thing, and HiCal also makes a rear peep that replaces the normal rear sight.

Who aims when they are mag dumping, all the SKS's around here that's what they are used for.

We have had excellent feedback with our peep sight, replaces the factory rear sight & gives you a great sight picture, we have them, in a 3 pc combo special, HERE.

Any feedback on the raveneye sks peep sight? I want the sks to be my first gun and I'm torn between that sight and the hical sight.

Buy the rifle and play with the stock sights before you worry about switching them out. You might find you'd rather a scope rail or something else like tech sights (or just a different gun. I love my SKS, but I am not putting any money into it. It serves its purpose, but even with a different rear sight its still going to be a minute-of-capitalist-scum rifle. The sks serves its purpose fine, but its a lot easier to buy something else vs trying to make an SKS into something its not. Get a 22lr bolt action if you want something accurate, or get a real hunting rifle if you want something capable of taking game. Get an SKS if you just want to make noise and put holes in stuff from 50 feet.)

I loved my tech sights, but after a long day of shooting and having not taken them apart in awhile I goofed on the disassembly procedure and rounded the slotted hole in the plastic sight body. That user error on my part rendered them useless. The real problem being that no vendors appear to carry them anymore! Tech Sights even updated the design and made the new sight bodies out of metal to prevent this from happening! They are fantastic and I fully recommend them if you can find them, just don't be like me and goof taking them apart!

I replaced it with a Raveneye peep sight. Which from a durability and simplicity standpoint is a better design. But it's nowhere near as enjoyable as the tech sight was to shoot.

Those are the two I've got experience with and I'd recommend them both but for different reasons. Tech Sights for a range rifle and the Raveneye for a bush beater (Which my rifle is)

Tech sight and a narrower front post. Best combo for irons on the SKS.

This is the way to go.

The only things I've seen actually improve SKS accuracy are this sight combo and making sure the action is solid in the stock.

Other than that it is what is.....

We should run a RavenEye day at a local range just so people can see how good a sight it is.

I realize I have a stake in the game, but for what its worth ...

Keeping the rifle easy to maintain looms very large for me. I firmly believe in making products consistent with the original concept of the rifle. The same goes for the method of adjustment, there should be no tools needed to adjust the sight and from an aesthetic point of view something that fits the look of the rifle appeals to me very much.

I am also skeptical that a rifle like the SKS can benefit all that much by extending the sight radius. We are not dealing with a bench rest accuracy queen here.

Having the sight somewhat forward confers an advantage in peripheral view, very useful in the field or in action type shooting.

That being said when I tested the pre-production RavenEye I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in group size and consistency. I certainly wasn't expecting that much of an improvement but I suppose the lining up of front and rear sights becomes more consistent with a peep than with the groove and post, and it certainly showed.

One last point: we have sold many of these sights and have never had one request for a return.

They are not only popular but every bit as durable as the original rear sight with minimal moving parts and made of a quality steel.
