Recently scored a new Canuck 12 GA 16" tactical with 4 chokes covering any type of shot/slug available, 3 handles including a adjustable rifle stock with a cheek pad & sling anchors. Bought a electronic sight for it as well. I am pretty impressed with what seems to be alot of versatility with this gun. Especially its all around quality for the price point and its compact nature to carry around. Seems to be good for anything, all types of bird & game hunting, defense etc. I have never hunted with one and wondering if anyone has had experience using these as a all around go to? and their personal opinions based on this? Thnx:rockOn:

I've used a variety of tac style guns for hunting. It hasn't stopped me from getting game. Whether it be 12.5" barreled pumps or dual pistol gripped mossbergs or ar patterned semi auto look alikes they work. They handle differently but a shotgun is basically a tube that throws shot in the direction it's pointed at.
My newest addition is a Beretta 1301 comp which will be new over water duck gun

They work well for most anything aside from wing shooting, where you will benefit from a longer barrel when swing/follow through and velocity are concerned. If your shooting game on the ground or out of a tree a short barrel with chokes works great, carrying it through thicker brush is a lot easier than with a 28” or longer barrel.

The key is to pick your max distance you’ll shoot and pattern out to that with your chokes and pick accordingly for patterns and slug accuracy, I seem to always end up with mod, imp mod or full chokes that give me the shot pattern I’m looking for out to 40y and good slug accuracy from 50-75y. Which is about how far I’d need to shoot anything with a slug while I’m hiking around hunting with a shotgun in my neck of the woods. Anything farther than that and I likely already have a rifle with me and am not hunting small game.

The shortest choked barrel I hunt with is a 12.5”, works just as well as my 20” turkey barrel at the same ranges. Two years ago I used my 14” rifle sighted tac14 clone with a full choke to ground swat grouse, it worked great provided I shot within my intended ranges.

With a bit of motivation (and preparation) and with realistic expectation... anything could be made to work...
- Is it the best tool for the job?... Probably not.
- Would it be my first choice?... Probably not.
- Can it still be fun?... You bet :pirate:

Canuck regulator used to get used a fair bit duck hunting from my kayak. 12.5" barreled pump. I had some issues with my shoulder and elbow and switched to a semi auto as paddling with all my dekes and gear was putting to much strain on me to pump well. I never missed a duck due to having the lil pump over another firearm.
